5thhorseman wrote: Sun Dec 15, 2024 1:49 pm Yeah I agree if he's coasting or holding back that's obviously not acceptable. If that's the case, get rid of him.

What I'm saying is that at his age he should still be expected to improve which should ultimately make it a fair value contract. Hughes's contract is a steal for us so I think that's an unfair comparison. The Miller contract is kind of opposite to Petey's. His play will decline so by the end of it it won't be as good a value as it is now.

The real problem I think is that according to the eye test for most people it's hard to believe he is going to get better. He's skinny, can't stay on his feet, doesn't drive the play, gets a lot of secondary assists and freebie points. He looks like a floater and a leech. He's not making the brilliant plays that he did it in his early years; the promise seems to have disappeared. It seems that what you see is what you get right now and for the next 7 years. But this is where the intangibles come into play, his drive, his competitiveness, what management see in him. They obviously believe he will become more than he is right now and that's why he got 11.6.
No. At his age improvement should not be so much that it makes it a fair value contract. He is in his 7th year. He should be worth this money now. We're not talking about a guy who signed his monster deal right after his ELC a la McDavid. He signed a bridge deal. 26 years of age should see him producing steadily like he did 2 seasons ago at the very least.

Anyone, with even a halfway objective mind, who watched him play since his rookie season should be able to see that this guy was NOT going to be a consistent performer. Apart from his hockey IQ, he didn't possess the physical attributes that set the upper echelon apart from the pack.

Explosive speed? Nope.

Physically dominant/hard on the puck? Nope.

Character that digs in and rises above in times of adversity? Nope.

Makes his linemates better consistently? Nope.

We have had nothing but excuses and a continual preaching of patience for 6 years. Nobody was doing that for McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Makar, Draisaitl, Panarin, Matthews, etc. because they proved time and again why they were worth it. The exception might be MacKinnon who took 4 seasons to hit his stride (and hasn't looked back).....but he was paid like a guy who had yet to reach his potential and was a bargain contract for several years for Colorado.

MacKinnon is also a great current example of why Pettersson's contract is a terrible one. MacKinnon is making $1M more than EP, but he's scoring at a much higher ppg pace since the season before he signed his deal.

While one can point like an obtuse troll to the lack of ire (from some) over the Beagle's, Eriksson's, and Roussel's, other than the Air Thief's, none of those guys were expected to even contribute in the top-6. They were brought in for role player positions to create a hardworking culture while the team transitioned away from the Sedin era to whatever was coming next. They were overpaid because they were being asked to come to a losing team at a point in their careers where signing for cheaper elsewhere may have meant a better shot at some playoff hockey and possibly a ring.

The contracts to Desharnais and Heinen are not worth getting twisted in a knot over. While clearly money could have been spent better on someone else, they are 2 year contracts that are easily moved. $11.6M is not easily moved, especially when the player clearly is not earning it.

Put it this way.....

Necas + Kotkeniemi was floated as an offer from Carolina.

Necas is killing it this year and making $6.5M.

Pull the trigger on that trade and sign Tanev for $4.5M.

$600K savings and you have 2 impact players that are making a difference rather than a bambi decoy on skates.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

As for the 11.6 Million Dollar Man, I have never liked that contract. Can’t blame him for signing it but he is not living up to it. Something is off with this team and I get the feeling one of Petey and Miller will have to go.

I, if I was mgmt, would check in with Hughes and see who he would want gone. Think they would be able to get good value back for Miller but would probably have to retain on any possible Petey trade.

Almost forgot, my run of starting GDTs appear to be at an end.
I think the fans might burn the building down if they traded Miller. Man, would that be bad for business.

Peter, not so much.

You could bring back a 2nd rounder and a 2nd line C right now for Petey and I think most intelligent fans would be OK with that.

Mëds, I must confess, I no longer trust whatever it is you have to say about Pettersson anymore, it’s all too deeply rooted in hate. Your observations of him are plagued with ill-gotten feelings

I am no Petey fan now, due to his current contract and on ice performance, but that return would be nuts. For that return you keep him and try to figure it out.

Enough GMs would be looking at his past performances and figuring a change of scenery would be enough to bring back the old Petey that a solid return would still be in the cards. Question would be what kind of cap hit would the Canucks have accept in a return or how much they would have to retain on Petey’s current deal. They should still be able to get at least a 1st + a top prospect and roster players and cap dump back in a Petey trade.

It's not just Petterson Dude. There a loathing undertone to almost everything he writes.

Sounds like Tocchet continued to hurt feelings during and after today's practice.

Well, he does deal with the Zombie Apocalypse on a daily basis.

Never found Mëds to have a loathing undertone, however poetic that may be.

Nor do I find him miserable.

Just plain-spoken.

Agree or disagree Dude is pretty blunt.

This is potentially going to be a future problem in this league, already is to some degree.

Paid to early, spoiled rotten, Prima-Donnas (NOT necessarily referring to a certain Swede) with boo boo lips not willing and able to play.

I dunno, I kind of gotten used to the bluntness and enjoy the vicious, anti-Scandanavian schtick(?) of a certain Les Miserables crotchety ambulance driver.

We don't have to all get along at this here GDHTMB. Can always take a leave of absence in case of hurt feelings.

No drama necessary in this Corner.
