I agree with the gist of your post, although I'm surprised that you included Bourdon and Butcher in your list?

Bourdon and Butcher are the type of players the team is crying out for...

A blue line of Bourdon, Butcher and Hughes would be dynamic...

Moreso mentioned them as first round players who did not pan out as well as one might hope a # 1 pick defender would as, for the purposes of this discussion, Quinn Hughes is expected to.
For some reason that seems like a harsh take on Bourdon.....

Snapped a knee, can't skate, has no balls, died.

Either way dude did not pan out.

You'd think an EMT (sic) would not be bothered by a death take.

Mëds wrote: Mon Jun 14, 2021 12:11 pm Hughes is not a stud #1 blueliner, he will never be the all situations minute eater that is so coveted by every team as his value on the PK just doesn't seem to be there. On top of that he's only 21....
Admittedly I know little of the player other than he is small (which I do not like) and can skate (which I do).

So, far be it from me to criticize or even have a semblance of opinion.

But are your first line and the partial second not somewhat oxymoronic?

Can he not mature into a more solid PK'er as he learns the NHL game, the players in it and his positional requirements?

At his age does he not have some room to grow, build wise at the very least, is he that much smaller than say, Brian Raflaski?
The question is, how big of a gamble to you take with contract negotiations ($/term) on that development.

I figure this story of Hughes difficult negotiations is yet another media click bait.

His play away from the puck was a concern.

Passing a semi on a blind corner was a poor decision.

Dhaliwal:
Agent JP Barry on Pettersson and Hughes deals:

we are exploring shorter term for Elias 5 years and under, Quinn longer.
Petey shorter term, Hughes long term deals on the horizon.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

What is the strategy behind that? Spread out the signing hits?

Or maybe its what the players prefer?

Maybe Pettersson prefers a bridge deal like Brock and then hopes to hit a long term home run contract after that? Maybe Hughes prefers to take a longer deal that takes him closer to UFA? Maybe Canucks are offering more to Hughes because they see the consistency and maybe they want to see more consistency from Pettersson. And maybe we will never know.

Or maybe Benning understands that no matter which way he goes he will get blasted so he is being clever in going each way so the naysayers will have a hard time arguing against themselves?
The only HW the Canucks need

Dhaliwal is a fucking moron. The Canucks won’t be signing Pettersson to a four or five year contract. He must be oblivious to the fact that both deals walks the player straight to UFA.

I'd say 3 years for Petey, low AAV, and by 2024 the cap should skyrocket again plus we'd clear out all the bs contracts and we can see how Petey is doing by then to gauge how much to give him for his 8 year deal.

Hughes I bet he gets a Ivan Provorov type deal - 6 yrs x $6.75M.

If we get Hughes on that type of cap hit, we're laughing.

For Petey, it was only a year ago that we were thinking $11 mil per year, and he clearly hasn't performed to that type of contract yet. He doesn't want to go the MacKinnon route either, which will probably cost Nate 25-30 million by the time he's UFA.

Frankly, it's obvious that Petey wants to go short-term, and if any media hacks try to stoke controversy over this, they are morons.
