Yeah, the mask cannot stop a virus per se, but it prevents your coughing and sneezing to spread droplets in other people's face,as shown in the clip Micky posted.
It's not very good protection for the person wearing it, it is mainly protecting other people in the viscinity by catching aerosol and droplets leaving your nose and mouth and stopping it from reaching other people.
Originally they thought the virus mainly spread theough droplets, but it now seems aerosol spread is also a factor. Masks reduce both, but does not prevent it altogether. The problem is it is hard to make a good study on the effect of masks.
A Danish study showed that in a group of people wearing masks over a certain period of time 1.8% tested positive for corona and in the control group of people not wearing masks 2.1% did.
Now, this can either be interpreted as virtually the same, or that there was a 14% reduction in cases among those wearing masks (0.3/2.1), which is not a lot, but it is something. But either way, all people agree that the mask primarily protects other people rather than the one carrying it, but how do you test that? In a humane and ethically sound manner? You can't really have people who are infected sneeze at 100 people while not wearing a mask and then at 100 people while wearing a mask and see what happens. Thus it is a lot of guesswork, but common sense says it probably has some impact, but not complete prevention.
Social distancing is still the most important means to prevent spread.

Masks are not the best method to fight this but it is a good reminder to keep your distance and following the guidelines. The anti-maskers at the rally where not only not wearing a mask but they were also not keeping social distancing and even hugging. If we did nothing then how many more people would be in the hospital compared to the 334 in there now?
Curious to know how many people are hospitalized annually for the normal flu/cold?

No shit the mask aren’t the ‘be all end all’, people need to self distance, they also need to wash their hands and use common sense. The tards that support Donnelly and anti masking, anti vaccine etc are complete fucking morons. These idiots are smarter than Doctor Henry...... yeah no.2Fingers wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 9:38 am Masks are not the best method to fight this but it is a good reminder to keep your distance and following the guidelines. There's a simple response to anti-vaxxers: dart guns.

I really chuckle at the people that say this is a government conspiracy to control us.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:23 amNo shit the mask aren’t the ‘be all end all’, people need to self distance, they also need to wash their hands and use common sense. They already have control. Everyone’s got your phone number. There’s cameras everywhere. Big Brother has been watching for years. The people that attend these rallies and refuse to mask up and keep their distance are just dummies. You can’t fix em.2Fingers wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:30 amI really chuckle at the people that say this is a government conspiracy to control us.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:23 amNo shit the mask aren’t the ‘be all end all’, people need to self distance, they also need to wash their hands and use common sense. That’s just it. If you aren’t a scumbag why do you care if there’s cameras everywhere?

I like the way BC has handled the pandemic. For the most part the government has gotten out of the way and let Public Health deal with it.
From the beginning there has been a reluctance to impose hard rules, instead we have guidelines. Business shut downs have been targeted at specific sectors instead of blanket lock downs with a laundry list of exceptions. The emphasis has been on individual social responsibility.
Social distancing, hand washing and masks in public spaces have all been voluntary. Businesses and commercial spaces have been given guidelines to develop response plans, little different than any other health and safety issues. Masks only became mandated by Public Health when the business community asked for it because they did not want to police the contentious issue themselves.
What has disappointed me is the way some sectors of the public have demanded hard fast draconian rules. Things like demanding mandatory masks in all public spaces, travel restrictions, business lock downs and with it all, more government cheques. We've seen out of province and out of country vehicles vandalized and we've seen people erect "Fuck Off" signs on the edge of communities.
Those wanting freedom from guidelines due to commercial concerns, consider this, BC has ~10,000 active cases and another ~10,000 people in isolation as close contacts. That is 20,000 people, say 75% are in the work force, that is 15,000 not showing up for work. What is the economic impact of that? How greater would it be if the guidelines were removed?
Those wanting prolonged government bailout cheques. There is a massive shortage of workers in the retail sector. In the suddenly booming mineral exploration business there is a shortage of workers. These range from entry level to managerial. But why work when there are handouts. Household savings have increased through the pandemic.
The situation is still the same as it was in the Spring, ease the burden on the healthcare sector. We aren't eliminating COVID 19. The genie is out of the bottle and the virus will work it's way through communities, the thing is, manage that rate so the heath care system can cope. I said it months ago, I think British Columbians embraced the guidelines above and beyond in the Spring and limited their activity too much. It is a fine balance with, as we are now seeing, little in the way of a throttle and brake system.
