Can somebody explain to me why Gillis let Torres go? Was it because he prefers nice guys like the gentley soft Chris Higgins who disappear in the playoffs and clutch games and the puck giveaway king - David Booth?

I believe there was some rumours of dressing room conflict... but I can't say for sure.

Torres is the kind of take-no-prisoners that legitimately scares the opposition. This guy will scramble your eggs and not bat an eye. He's a perfect 4th liner and seems to come up clutch when it counts. Him and Mike Brown have really allowed San Jose to elevate their physical game.

Injured, couldn't buy him out. Got him for nothing, can't imagine him playing worse than he has. Hard to fault Gillis for trying.

Unsure. Leaning towards no. Might have had to trade Hodgson, could've gotten someone other than Kassian. Hodgson was a prime prospect, Kassian might be a valuable player, but everyone knows they take time and can go sour. I think Gillis could've done better, although Kassian is the type of player most teams need more of (physical + Skilled)

8. Do you like the return for Luongo?

Yikes. 1/2 the season for that hit? I dunno, would not be surprised to see an appeal.

The Sharks employ a head coach, multiple assistant coaches, a goalie coach, strength & conditioning coaches, etc...yet no "hitting technique" coach. This could have all been avoided and saved the Sharks from losing a player for half the season. I mean, it can't just be the fact that Raffi doesn't get it, right?

It's old news, but Samuelsson was traded, they didn't let him walk. That's not even a good question.

Torres, at the time, was worth keeping as letting him go was a step in the direction of becoming pushovers with no bite. The player himself was probably wrong, but he should have been replaced by someone similar (who could hit without getting suspended).

Two reasons Torres was not kept. One, he tried to play hard ball on term and cap. Canucks considered brining him back for one more year. Second reason was he was not liked in the dressing room. They risked having a couple of other FAs not coming back if Torres was on the team. His off colour, sexual and sexist manner of speaking, banter and joking and behaviour offended many of the Canuck players at the time.

It wasn't his on ice performance or behaviour that drove him out of Vancouver.

As for the 41 games, good. He is a multiple repeat offender. He clearly never got the message. While I celebrate that the NHL has finally sent a strong message it is tempered with knowing that it is easy for them to send this kind of message to a washed up 4th line player with a reputation than it is to set a precedent. This probably would have been his last season.

For SJS, they are stuck with his cap and he takes up a roster spot. I like that too.

Torres levels Silverberg with an elbow to the head. Got 5 and a game, suspension very probable. With his history this should be a 10 gamer but with the lack of injury it could be a lot less. I say 3-5 games.

I would only be happy if Puka was waived and picked up as well . There is not much chance of him being waived however ,and even less chance of him actually being claimed . It's laughable nobody took a chance on Linden Vey . Ignitowski equates him to a 2nd round pick while 29 other managers wouldn't give up a contract spot for him .

Far be it from me to be a JB defender, but I have to admit, at the time, I thought that trade was a good risk to take. Sadly, Vey didn't pan out and I very much doubt he will at this point, but, given my original sentiment on the trade, I can't really criticize the initial deal.

Who knows. If Vey figures out how to play with his extra 12 lbs, he could be a very solid 3rd liner. It's too early to write him off completely. Some time in the AHL might boost his compete level, and overall effort
