With Canada winning the Spengler Cup. are the Olympics necessary?
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Who wouldn't want to get up at 0230 to watch former Canucks greats like Mason Raymond and Andrew Ebbett being coached by Willie D?

Yes. They offer Elias Pettersson another opportunity to play at the international level.

So, you only support Team Canada if the NHL participates?
It might end up being quite a decent competition. These guys are certainly extremely excited about the opportunity.

Having said that, I'm not watching it live at 2:30AM. PVR it shall be.

Canada beat Sweden 4-1 in the dress rehearsal.
Enroth in the Swedish crease instead of Fasth, that most expect to be the starting goalie.

It seems to have become a tradition that Canada and Sweden square off in a practice game ahead of most major tournaments.
Guess it's a good litmus test for both nations to see where you stand. The problem is that these "friendlies" tend to get heated and Sweden has more than once suffered injuries in them...

Oh well, I guess the players enjoy it. Probably more meaningful than a game against eg South Korea. :look:

Hey Per - is Pettersson in the lineup, or on the squad? Also - how is Sweden reacting to the lack of NHL players, has excitement diminished over there?

Sadly, Pettersson did not make the roster. Quite a few sports journalists think he should have, and I agree.
Sure, maybe they feel he is too light weight when the going gets tough, but I think he will be one of the best Swedish players of the upcoming generation, and I think this would have been a valuable experience for him. Forsberg was just 20 at Lillehammer.

Dahlin made the team though.

Most Swedes are upset the NHL players aren't allowed to play. There should be some way you could force the NHL to release players for the Olympic tournament. But once the games begin I guess we will all be watching just the same.

Great start for the tournament!

Slovakia beats Russia (or, technically "OAR", but... yeah... Russia) 3-2!

... and when you think things can't get crazier:

Slovenia beats the USA 3-2 in ot! Slovenia!
That's like a tiny little splinter of Yugoslavia.
And we all know how great a hockey nation Yugaslavia was, or... er...

Hilarious! :drink:
