Jim's next coach hire in any case should have years of NHL experience and have a decent defensive system, not all out offense schemes.
Gallant fits the mold!
I think it’s got more to do with whether the Aquilinis are bringing back Benning. Why go out and hire a very expensive coach if you’re going to gas the GM at seasons end? Let the incoming GM hire his own guy.

It’s a bad team, poorly constructed. I don’t know if any other coach does much better, maybe a little bit. I doubt very much whether any other coach could get this crew into the playoffs. Last year everything broke just right for them to have that good of a season.

Bullshit! No one is going to deny Benning structured some bad contracts and has attempted to resurrect some losers like Gagne, etc. but Travis Green has more than enough quality players to be over the 500 mark this season. Him and his two stooges are weak. Green is out coached by his adversary on a nightly basis.
I read an article earlier today that mentioned the Canucks PP was 4th overall last year.

This year, with the EXACT same group on that unit, they can't muster a shot on the powerplay only being down 1-0 in the 3rd period.

The power play looks the exact same as last year - other coaches have learned how to defend it, Canucks coaches can't figure out how to change it.

If you remove the bubble run, they were not playing very well even with Marky, Tanev and Toffy so its difficult to evaluate what the fuck we have but here is a short look:

Forwards-

We have a 1C who flashes elite but is absolutely not one of the top 5 centers, yet anyway. He has that potential though

We have a 1D who also flashes elite but is trending in the wrong direction defensively. This needs immediate correcting IMO.

We have one elite top line winger who is full marks and another who cant seem to stop fucking up(although this isnt indicative of his game IMO)

We have a good 2C who flashes brilliance but also wears down.

After that its a below average collection of retreads, has-beens and gross underachievers. In the system there are a couple good winger prospects and not much else.

Defense-

On the back end there is one one underachiever in NS, a bunch of average drivel and 1 solid looking defense prospect in Rathbone

In net...who the fuck knows

Changes are in order

I am with staying the course for the of the season, it's over already no point in panic moves to try to salvage it. Trade some vets (Sutter, Pearson, Virtanen, Roussel, Beagle, Benn, etc) for picks or young prospects, clear out as much cap space as you can for next season too. Ride it out. Hope this season allows the Canucks to re-sign Hughes and Pettersson for a bit cheaper. After the season is over, gas all the coaches except Clark. I am on the fence on firing Benning and the AGM but starting to lean towards gassing them too.

The trouble with moving on from Benning is hes by far and away the best GM the organization has ever had at drafting talent. Some of these picks are brilliant. Imagine going back to drafting rubbish again...fuck

I don't think the goal would be to salvage the season, it's too late for that. It would be good to start getting the players on track for next season, though.

If we get a new coaching staff in the off season, then the team gets to learn a new system in a short training camp and pre-season (assuming next season is 'normal'). I'd rather have them learn it now, think about it and train for it in the summer, then hit the ground running next year.

They don’t have to fire all the scouts.

I know it would never happen but I would love to see the Canucks demote Benning to an AGM / head of scouting position in the organization. Just don't let him anywhere near contract negotiations.

Yeah. It's a construction thing.

Horvat wears down because he's expected to play in every situation, and the only situation where he actually has help is on the 1PP unit. This is the first season where he has had a reliable winger who can help drive the play, I'm speaking of Hoglander. For the past several years he's been dragging around slugs like Eriksson, Pearson, and an injured Boeser at times.

Our blueline has been a mess since 2013. Benning has never fixed it. Gillis built a deep blueline that distributed ice time and put 3 guys out every night that were probably #2's on almost any team. The other 3 guys were all likely top-4 guys on most teams. BUT, he gave them trade protection in order to afford them.

This team was done as a contender in 2013, the real problem is that ownership didn't want to believe it. It meant that valuable assets were held onto for longer than they should have been, and those assets didn't want to open up their NTC's because, like most players, they don't want to admit when the window is closed. So they stick around because "ownership believes in them". This meant that incoming talent would be overpriced, and at a caliber that we have seen in Beagle, Roussel, Sutter, and Eriksson.

Has Benning done a bad job with several trades and contracts? Absolutely. Has he often been between a rock and a hard place in these situations? Definitely. But I can't think of many other options available to him that panned out better on other teams. Owners gave the direction and Benning had to do his best to make it happen.

His only glaring mistakes at the draft table so far are Virtanen and McCann. Juolevi wasn't ideal, but at the time he was looking very good as a junior, and his injuries are not something one can forecast. Sergechev, McAvoy, and perhaps Chychrun, may have been better choices if he was drafting a defenseman. Tkachuk probably the best bet in terms of value, but I doubt Clipboard Willie gives Tkachuk a chance here.....and the Sedins would never have tolerated his antics.

This year the bad contracts are coming home to roost. However, two of those contracts (Loui and Butter) are here because ownership insisted the window was still open. Roussel and Beagle are haunting the Canucks because Pettersson, Hughes, and the acquisition of Miller, coupled with Markstrom rounding into form, pushed the Canucks at least a year ahead of where most projected they would be.

As we saw at the beginning of this season, Pettersson is still finding his way into being an elite pro. Hughes doesn't have the best defensive game, and apart from Tanev the warts show way more. His offensive production offsets that to a degree, but for a puck possession dman, who puts up almost a point per game, I'd say his career minus-24 stat is rather telling.

It's all in the build right now, and we won't get a real picture of what Benning can build until this new core has matured and the augmenting pieces coming in reflect the fact that they are joining a team with a stable core of players.

Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, Hughes, and Demko, are pieces of a core that you can build around. It needs at least one more piece, a blueliner to pair with Hughes.....unless Quinn magically develops a defensive game that is at this point not there. Some could argue that Miller fits in there, if he does then great, if he doesn't then you need a legit winger for Bo too.

Either way, this year is a write-off. Get the highest possible lottery odds.

We could in theory let the coach go and bring in interim Coach Stan Smyl who coached in the AHL for 5 years iirc, he's already on the payroll. Then in the offseason - let the chips fall where they may.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Most of the current scouting staff were here with Gillis.

Maybe think about it like this: Getting excited about Benning's draft picks is like being excited about how hot your psycho-bitch girlfriend is. Yes, she's fun and exciting, but she spent all your money, wrecked your car, and is mean to your dog. Overall your life is bad.

Benning's draft picks are fun and exciting, but he can manage neither assets, nor the cap, nor the expectations of short-sighted owners. Overall, your hockey team is bad.

The thing is, unlike being your girlfriend, General Manager of a major professional sports franchise is a desirable and sought-after position. The Canucks could get someone hot, and reasonable to live with.
