In 06/07, the Canucks had the top PK in the league. Josh Green played a large role in that. What's he up to nowadays? If he's still in the league, why not make a minor trade for him?

What about another enforcer? (although if Rypien comes back and is healthy, maybe this isn't necessary?).
Johnson is far better than Josh Green ever was... We got 2 enforcers with Hordi and O'brien.. which is 2 more than last year :) Cowan just didn't scare anybody... Rypien if he gets healthy can be used as utility replacement if more " energy " is needed..

No, whats needed is 1 more top 6 winger.. and if anythings left in the pot.. add 1 more good dman.. With what we got it should be enough to be a contender..

No argument from me there. I totally agree. The point I was trying to make was that perhaps Josh Green was an excellent PK'er (given how he played a large part of the Canucks' PK back in 06/07 when we were tops in the league). If Green still has the PK ability (wherever he is), then I wouldn't mind getting him back here.

Get Green and never use Brown. (and maybe later, we can upgrade to Red! :| ).

Guys like Josh Green fills specific needs.

Farhan...

Josh Green is playing for Anaheim's farm team in Iowa. He signed as a free agent last summer and couldn't make the big team from training camp.
We already have decent PK and have no need for another 4th liner.
We need more scoring...PP winger and defence depth...PP specialist.

Couple things:

1) What is your definition of "decent." Are the Canucks even in the top ten in terms of penalty killing? If not - work still needs to be done in this department.

2) Green could be had for what? $450K? $700K? Canucks could still afford a 'specialist' like Green (hastellavista Mike Brown), AND afford a scoring winger and/or defensive depth.

More likely than not - a move like this would be insignificant....but still. Green, Burrows, Kesler, Mitchell, and Luongo were perhaps the biggest reason why our PK was so damn good that year. Why not attempt to re-unite that?

I was also very impressed with Green with his time in Vancouver, yet i really don't see why Green should be offered a contract or traded for. I kinda think his time in the NHL may have passed him by now. If he is so amazing at the pk as you seem to think. Why then have 30 teams in the nhl passed him up as an option for a pk specialist fourth liner? I thought he did a terrific job for us on the penalty kill, and yeah last year i was a bit upset that he didn't get signed again because of his value on the penalty kill. I have a hard time putting him ahead of our current crop of penalty killing forwards. Our pk hasn't been great because we have had one Roberto Luongo out (timely saves)... and one Ryan Johnson(timely shot blocking) sidelined as well. Those two guys and don't forget Sami Salo play a huge part in killing penalties. The biggest reason in my opinion and i think if you ask most coaches in the nhl would be the Goaltender. We haven't had those timely stops that have kept us in games. Not that Sandford and Labarbera are doing a terrible job, but they are no Luongo.

Who knows? Perhaps other teams expected MORE out of Green (i.e. other than just being a PK specialist). My line of thinking is this: If the shoe fits, wear it. Who cares how Green plays(ed) on other teams. The guy was a great PK'er here, and had great chemistry with Kesler and Burrows on the PK.

My line of thinking was the same for Anson Carter. Who gives a flying f$#$^% if the guy wasn't worth 2 million+ elsewhere. As a Canuck, and on the Sedin line, he was worth every bit as much.

When something worked well....or is working well....you don't question it. You preserve it.

And you know what? If getting a guy like Green fails...it's only worth $450K or $700K. No big deal.

p.s. How old is Green anyways? To the best of my knowledge, he's not that old. No way in hell should he should be "washed up", etc.

Farhan.... get over it.. Green was a 4th liner.. played center on PK... Didn't play with Kessler or Burrows.. was 2nd unit PK.. Right now we got Johnson and Kesler as PK centers... both are better than Green.. problem with our PK is not the forwards but the D and goaltending... Pissing away any money on an AHL player at this stage just takes us that much further away from signing the Winger we need in place of Raymond.. and a good Dman . Raymond is not a "core" player or even a good winger yet.. trade him if the right deal comes up..

I was under the impression that Green played witb Kesler and Burrows quite a bit that year....but I might be wrong. Whatever.

For the most part however, I agree with your post. My 'Green' idea was more hypothetical than an actual want. As far as our PK goes, are you sure it's only our 'D'?

This year for instance, even when Luongo was in the line-up, we weren't exactly the top PK team in the league. Who was missing from that 06/07 team? We still had Burrows, Kesler, Mitchell, Ohlund, and Luongo. Right? (and Johnson). That's one reason why I thought of Green.

I also agree with you on Raymond.....it just depends on what your version of "right deal" is (which I don't think is Doug Weight).

When considering what the Canucks need to add to make it successful, I can't help but think about the immediate impact Paul Reinhart had when he arrived. An impact point man for the PP makes a huge difference. At best the current pointmen are the shoot and hope for a rebound variety, limit success.

So my vote goes to a quality pointman, I'm not sure if Schneider is of that quality but he's the best I can think of who might get moved

I agree, this team still lacks a quality PP QB and a scoring winger. Bieksa, Ohlund, Salo, and Edler do the job fine, but they're no Boyle or Blake, or even a Joe Corvo offensively.

Curious as to what Schneider might command as a rental. Prospect and a pick at the very least I'd imagine. Keep in mind we'll be in a bidding war for him. I would rather make a play for Kaberle as a replacement for Ohlund. Might cost us more but he's not really a rental and I think his stats are down because his team is so bad. With the way defenseman have signed recently (Redden) I'd be more comfortable with Kaberle at 4+ than dishing out 5.5+ for Ohlund.

As far as Green. LOL. We have enough plugs. We can put 9 guys into our bottom 6. We need some more offensive instincts.

I'd like to think we could get a mega-deal done to land a Kovalchuk or Nash. I just don't think we have the pieces or requisite guts to make such a deal. Raymond and Schneider and picks certainly won't do it.

I've been saying pick up Kovalchuk for a while. He's wasting his career in Atlanta. I don't know how a player of his skill can just take the money and not care about the fact that his team can't win. Assuming he has some pride left in him and Atlanta keeps an open mind, I think we should throw something their way and hope for the best.

With Salo coming back off injuries soon.. our PP and PK should improve.. He's got a far better shot than either Bieksa or Edler.. and when he's on is as good as any in the league ( problem is his fragility and lack of shot consistency ).. Boyle? .. got the worst +/- on his team - strictly a 1 dimensional player whose scoring does not make up for his defensive deficiencies.. Maybe Bowmeister for a rental if he doesn't sign? In my opinion we need to pick up 1 dman.. ( not necessarily star but better than Davidson or Nycholat ) and 1 top winger... to be a real contender.. I,m not opposed to trading away Raymond who isn't that great a shot.. and is a bit of a puck hog if it will make the team stronger and of course we got other low end assets on the farm who can be used as " throw ins" to fill out weaknesses in other NHL clubs roster and to give depth... Krog, Jaffrey,Grabner etc.. with the addition of a winger we would be forced to trade away either Pyatt.. Raymond, Rypien or Hanson to make room ..

Let's face it - there just aren't many trade pieces in our organization. Other than Grabner and perhaps Raymond, I don't think any of our players or prospects would really generate any trade talk of value. Cory Schneider didn't wow anybody with his call-up and even if he does post outstanding numbers with the Moose he hasn't done anything at the NHL level to prove that he is the real deal. He's still 2-3 years away from being starting material and he's already 22.

Nycholat, Davison, Jaffray, Krog, and Rypien are farm fodder and throw-ins at best. They're worth less than a Pascal Dupuis in the Marian Hossa deal.

I can't see us acquiring a Kovalchuk or Nash with the pieces we've got in our organization unless we move significant players, such as Kesler or the Sedins.
