Oct. 5, 2007: San Jose Sharks 3 Vancouver Canucks 1

The Buzz:
New season, old problems for the Vancouver Canucks.
Goaltender Roberto Luongo allowed three goals on the first nine San Jose Sharks shots Friday en route to a 3-1 season loss Friday at General Motors Place. Only Brendan Morrison, in his 513th consecutive game, was able to score.

Goat of the Game:
Luongo didn’t allow the first shot on goal, but he allowed the second to Joe Thornton at 5:30 of the first. Jeremy Roenick had a pair before the period was out. Based on the Canucks’ lack of offensive punch, the game was effectively over.

Lamplighter:
Shark old-timer Roenick’s shot through traffic after a face-off made it 3-0 at 15:20 of the first period was the goal of the night. Will the gambler’s luck continue across the street at Edgewater Casino?

Turning Point:
Ryan Shannon almost pulled the Canucks to within a goal, but Paul Devorksi immediately declared no goal with 9:34 left in the third. A video review confirmed his decision.

Sin Bin:
Late second-period penalties to Shannon (high-sticking) and Mattias Ohlund (tripping) gave the Sharks a two-man advantage, but San Jose failed to score. Canucks failed to create momentum.

Combo B:
What to call the first-line trio of Ryan Shannon, Ryan Kesler and Markus Naslund? Triple-S for Stars and Stripes and a Swede? “Nazzy and the Ryans?â€￾ For the home opener, call them ineffective.

Stat’s Stupid:
The Sharks are the heaviest team in the league, averaging 203.8 pounds. The Canucks are 3.8 pounds lighter.

Sick Bay:
Aaron Miller may have popped a Tylenol after the game. He went forehead-first into the crossbar behind Luongo with eight minutes left. He was momentarily dazed but skated off on his own.

X-File:
Markus Naslund began his eighth season as captain, tying Stan Smyl. He has averaged more than a point-per-game (492 in 476).

Sign of the Times:
GM Place rink board advertising now features corporate logos on a white background, which makes it easier to see the puck and offers the illusion that the ice surface is bigger. The most important sign was the Northwest Division championship banner, which was lifted to the rafters above Luongo before Marc “Half O Canadaâ€￾ Donnelly belted the anthems.
