From the Flames - Lindholm and Markstrom should make team Sweden. Gaudreau and Tkachuk should make team USA. That's about it.

I just shit stained my drawers realizing how deep the Americans are. They could actually ice two competitive teams. Ridiculous how quickly they are taking over the game

I totally believe the first sentence.

As per the other two: No they couldn’t and no they aren’t. Thanks for coming out :drink:

The Canadian roster is way better. I guess 2010 and 2014 were a fluke. The Americans won a best on best in 96 on a high stick goal by a kid raised in North Van. The end. In men’s they have won Jack shit since. But you hang onto that 96 World Cup. You need it.

A good number of Canadian olympic team candidates ain’t exactly having stellar years:

McKinnon
Scheiffle
Marner
Barzal
Monahan
Chabot
Point is struggling with injuries

Can’t rely on the old man well past their prime fading stars anymore - Crosby, Toews, Tavares, Stamkos, Keith, Petrangelo, Doughty, Getzlaf, Benn

Might be an off time in Canada’s cycle. Decent number of quality Canadian talent going high in the draft lately and coming but the cycle we are currently in isn’t what I call great. I would say the Americans are favoured to win. A ton of Americans playing great hockey right now

Canada will have to rely on Bergeron and Marchand I gather and let McDavid play by himself

Not looking good

Seventeen-year NHL veteran Eric Staal and Owen Power, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, are among those who have been named to Canada's final men's Olympic ice hockey roster, sources told The Athletic. Kent Johnson, the No. 5 pick in last July's draft, is also confirmed as a member of the final squad.

Staal, 37, joined the AHL's Iowa Wild on a professional tryout agreement last week. The forward split last season between the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens. He has previous Olympics experience, helping lead Canada to a gold medal in 2010 with a goal and five assists in seven games.

The Sabres drafted the 19-year-old Power No. 1 in July. He was on Canada's 2022 world juniors team and became the first Canadian defenseman to score a hat trick when he potted three goals in the team's opening game against Czechia before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.

Johnson, 19, was picked fifth by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2021 draft. Like Power, he attends the University of Michigan.

The full roster is expected to be announced early this week. Here are the names confirmed by The Athletic so far:

Forwards

Daniel Carr
Adam Cracknell
David Desharnais
Landon Ferraro
Kent Johnson
Eric Staal
Daniel Winnik

Defensemen

Mark Barberio
Jason Demers
Owen Power

Eric Staal enjoyed a rennaisance under Gabby a few years ago. Maybe he could be a post Olympic add to bring some leadership and depth up the middle.
