Because of our first 50 minutes of play I’m glad we didn’t pull off the OT or shootout win. We didn’t deserve 2 points tonight. Miracle comebacks are nice for boosting the confidence of some teams, but the Canucks have a long history of being a team that mails it in for 2 periods and then comes alive…..this group needs to lose games that they don’t show up for until they learn they need to show up.
Wids makes a good point about the fire drill in our own end…..it was notably absent compared to last year. That’s optimism and I’ll attribute that to the on-boarding of the new assistant coach and the exchange of #23.
Our PP looked exactly the same except for the afore mentioned #23. Overall not encouraging.
Petey and Miller have picked up right where they left off last year…..underwhelming.
There was really nothing in this game that made me think this team is going to be much more exciting than it was last year.
Those who have said this group won’t do anything with Green behind the bench are probably spot on.

Vancouver carried the play 5v5 but special teams was all coilers. That 5v5 dominance plus Demko looking his best kept us in the fight.
How does Dowling get powerplay time? What am I missing there?
Burrows V2.0 is pretty good
Myers absolutely destroyed that little shit weasel Kieth and I loved it. He didn't touch another puck again I don't think. That makes up for anything he's ever fucked up before

Anyone else catch Bieksa saying curtly that he and Burrows don't talk? There must be some drama there

I make a point about not complaining when the Canucks lose in OT or SO on the road so I won't today either.
Good to see Demko in good form and that both our stud D man have scored a goal already in the season.

I didn't think we were all that out played for the first 50 minutes. Pretty indicative of a road team holding their own in another team's barn for their home opener.Mëds wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:33 am Because of our first 50 minutes of play I’m glad we didn’t pull off the OT or shootout win. Going to take Petey some time to get his game back but I saw improvements in his PP play time as the game went on. Miller is always either on or off.Mëds wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:33 am Our PP looked exactly the same except for the afore mentioned #23. Overall not encouraging.

I think most feel this group will overcome Green's shortcomings as a coach and succeed as a team anyway. As an aside; Why the heck can we never hear Brad Shaw? Might be a pleasant change of pace the odd time...

It’s his size. Not many GMs dare gamble on a short stack. But yes, he is coming along great and despite not being the tallest guy on the ice, he has no fear of going into the dirty areas.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 7:41 pm I think we can all agree now that Hoglander is a very good hockey player. Per, I know you’re not a massive fan of Hoglander but bare with me, in a 2019 redraft are you drafting Hoglander ahead of fellow Swedes who went ahead of him in the first round - Soderstrom, Broberg, Thomson, Bjornfot, HolmstromPer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 8:41 amIt’s his size. Mëds you need an afternoon with Cuz, the game was entertaining and with the massive change in players and TG doing his normal pre-season thing the team played well. Nice to see a checking system vs. the trap shit we have seen the past season. Watching the forwards pressuring the opposing teams D is great to see.Mëds wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:33 amBecause of our first 50 minutes of play I’m glad we didn’t pull off the OT or shootout win. The PP - if i was a media person i would ask 1 question.
Travis, last year the team ended the season ranked 25th on the PP, in the first game you seemed to have deployed the same system. Why do you expect the PP to improve this year?
As long as TG is the coach this team will never advance far.

At the end of the night, we were slightly ahead of the 5v5 play and even managed to start looking better than average on the PP, especially the 2nd unit. A lot of that had to do with Dowling being able to control on the halfboards. You don't see hands like that on Chase On Foods. But I agree that a placeholder shouldn't be on the PP.Cousin Strawberry wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 6:11 am Vancouver carried the play 5v5 but special teams was all coilers. The reason the game looked so frustrating was that we were down 2-0 early and spent most of the time shooting the puck right into Smith with no rebounds. Our special teams continue to be terrible early. Their first goal was a breakdown and the second was another bench minor that their #1 PP took advantage of.
Finally in the last half of the 3rd, we were able to break them down. It only seem like we were terrible for 50 minutes, but we really weren't. The only category they really beat us in all night were faceoffs.
The system is night and day better. This is the major thing that is going to improve this team. That and health. We'll see an even better team when Brock & Motte return and the placeholders get sorted out. Way too early to fly a banner from a plane, methinks.

I thought the game was very entertaining and sure...maybe we only edged them 5 on 5 play but contrasting that to the past 5 years definitely made it seem like it was all Canucks LOLCarl Yagro wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 11:10 amAt the end of the night, we were slightly ahead of the 5v5 play and even managed to start looking better than average on the PP, especially the 2nd unit. I didn't know what we had as a collective before last night and today I'm definitely more optimistic. They looked deep, fast, skilled and every bit the equal to a supposedly far superior coiler squad.
