Ah, come on. Nylander had one bad season, after having sat out half of it because of the contract issues.

He is basically a 20 goal 60 points kind of guy. We're talking Parise, Horvat, Nyquist, Kopitar, Tatar territory.
He is probably a bit overpaid, but he is not a bum and he is just 23, so he may not even have hit his peak yet.
Could still develop into a 80-90 points guy for all we know.

He was the best player on Team Sweden in the recent World Championship, and scored more points than any other player participating there, even though he played two games less than most of the others in the top ten.
And in 2017, when Sweden won the World Championship, he was named tournament MVP.

I know he is a Leaf, but that doesn't have to mean he is all bad. I'd love to have him on my team.

Great post. So true. In a full season, he's never had less than 61 points.

They race through all the other MLB highlights and tennis and other shit but they have to cram all the Toronto shit down everyone’s yaps.

Fucking brutal
They needed to talk about all those great non Toronto NBA and MLB teams in Canada.

Sports talk outside Toronto has no news. LOL. It's dead after you leave the GTA.

When Auston Matthews gets named your worst contract, you are in pretty damn good shape. LOL

Just look at some of the contrcats in the East on Buffalo, Montreal, Islanders, Pens, ETC. JUst awful.
I also question the wisdom of paying for depth, but overpaying for depth or paying the wrong guys is the same as overpaying for good players when they become RFAs (or UFAs). At the end of the day, there are only so many players you can have be part of your post-ELC core and when $$ are wasted wherever they are wasted that number decreases.
Pay your stars and cheap-out on bottom 6 talent. Bemning is doing the opposite, only he will have to pay through the nose for Boeser/Pettersen.

Why is it worse than having a massive amount of cap going to 6 or 7 worse players, many of which you could have filled with cheaper players?

Those 4 players are stars.

Nylander has no mmph to his game. He is a softy. He quivers at the though of the hard play. But that's what playoffs are.
Pettersson can play nastier. Book it.

What does Pettersen have to do with anything? :eh:

AFAIK he'll be stuck in the NCAA this season.

Like I said, I question the wisdom of paying too much for role players.

But paying bottom 6 talent $3 million instead of $1.2 million doesn't change what Benning will pay for Pettersson or Boeser except to the extent that there is no more cap room and someone has to be moved.

But paying good players more than necessary does change the playing field. Start with Matthews. A very good player, IMO. But a $11.6 million player with a minimum (5 year) contract? That's top 5 player in the league stuff, and he's really good, but he is not that. And so you take a guy like Marner, who can marshal an argument that he's every bit as valuable as Matthews (he is also very good, but not as valuable as Matthews IMO). And take Nylander and $ 7 million. Marner closer to Matthews or Nylander? Matthews. So you are thinking its Matthews money at $11M and max term or $9.5 at a shorter term. Because he's fitting into a relative worth structure. But wait. There's Aho in Carolina, who (unlike Marner) can play center and looks like he's every bit the player, putting up slightly smaller numbers with inferior linemates. He's @ an offer-sheet driven $8.5 M. So your "reasonable" shorter term Marner deal within the leaves salary structure is $1 M more than a closely comparable player. Because the leaves paid Matthews $1M too much (conservative, I think -- should have gotten 8 years for 11.6), Nylander $1.5M too much. All of the sudden, you are $3-4.5M in the hole from overpayment -- the amount of 1.5 to 2 depth overpayments.

This is not a defense of overpaying anyone, depth or otherwise. But when you get rolled in RFA signings, you establish values to other RFAs on your team that are out of sync with league norms.

When you go to the other extreme and play hardball -- like Colorado has done (Barrie, Duchene, O'Reilly to name a few) -- you have a risk, to be sure. You might force yourself into situations where trading is the only option. But you also have the hockey people thinking that Rantanen will get less than Marner.

Nearly all teams make mistakes here and there. As a leaves fan, you experienced a couple decades of more than your average share. The mistakes this leaves team has made are unforced, but not catastrophic by any means. There is excellent talent, and most of that talent is concentrated in players entering or in their prime. Of course it is better to have that with some overpayment than not have that at all. So in the big picture, there is a lot to like. Be excited about your club; think that something is going to happen there with all that talent that will get them to the next stage of the playoffs. Lord knows Canuck fans understand that feeling with the WCE early 2000s team (when it never happened) and the Sedin team (where it happened only once).

Well Per is biased in favour of players from his native Sweden.

The poor slob actually believed Jonathan Dahlen would be a big star!

Nylander has only ever played ONE "full season" btw

... and probably never will play another full season (cuz pussy).

And the truth is in his NHL career thus far Silly Willy has averaged just 55 points per 82 games.

Seven Million William is so flaccid he had to use a strapon when he had his way with Dumbass. Image

So the guy whose absence in the lineup of your excuse for flaming out in the first round while wasting the best cheap years of Matthews and Marner...

...isn't going to be missed at all now that he's become a victim to the leaves cap hell?
