Dreger: Sources say contract talks between the St Louis Blues and Blues captain, Alex Pietrangelo have broken off.

The team has advised Pietrangelo to pursue unrestricted free agency.
Jeremy Rutherford:

The Blues’ current offer is $7.7 million AAV, but Pietrangelo has been asked to accept the AAV without knowing the structure of the deal.
Big deal. He ain’t signing here.
Curious why not? We have a damn good team with a solid future plus we were the ones who knocked them out so he knows the group

The market may get quite flooded. The big issue with small NHL team budgets for the Canucks is that not many teams are going to be taking bad contracts off Benning’s hands without him paying way too large a price. Time is short for Benning to move out contracts. A little over two weeks before free agency. Maybe the best strategy is for Benning to not sign anyone, sit on whatever cash he has and see who doesn’t get a contract, and then start making some low ball offers. Players who don’t get good offers from other teams might find the idea of playing with Petey, Hughes, and the rest quite enticing.
If the market gets that flooded, and some very talented fan-favorite players are having a difficult time find a new home, then the NHL and PA may have to sit down and work out some special buyout allowances. I mean, more people will tune in to watch talented players rather than tolerate mediocrity skated out by guys like (in our case) Loui Eriksson.

Just a thought.

Well, if 7.7 from his hometown blues doesn’t get it done, he must want more than that.

We can’t afford 8x7, (he will be looking for money and term) and that’s not a contract we can take on.

We can if we let Markstrom and Toffoli walk, resign Tanev and a Laurent Broissot type to b/u Demko then give Virtanen a show me contract and a legitimate shot at the top 6 slot

Without considering signing Petey and Hughes for the season after next, I ran the numbers at Cap Friendly and if the Canucks can’t move out any contracts, don’t sign any of their UFAs, don’t qualify Stecher or Virtanen, and only sign reasonable contracts with RFAs Motte, Gaudette, and MacEwen, they’ll have a little over 11 million for Free Agent Frenzy. Here’s the numbers which include the overages for bonuses and Ferland on LTIR:

FORWARDS (13)
Right wing: Brock Boeser ($5,875,000) - Zack MacEwen ($1,000,000) - Brandon Sutter ($4,375,000) - Loui Eriksson ($6,000,000) - Kole Lind ($891,666)
Centre: Elias Pettersson ($925,000) - Bo Horvat ($5,500,000) - Adam Gaudette ($2,200,000) - Jay Beagle ($3,000,000)
Left wing: J.T. Miller ($5,250,000) - Tanner Pearson ($3,750,000) - Antoine Roussel ($3,000,000) - Tyler Motte ($1,250,000)

DEFENSE (7)
Right: Tyler Myers ($6,000,000) - Brogan Rafferty ($700,000) - Jordie Benn ($2,000,000)
Left: Quinn Hughes ($916,667) - Alexander Edler ($6,000,000) - Jack Rathbone ($925,000) - Olli Juolevi ($863,333)

GOALTENDER (2)
Thatcher Demko ($1,050,000) - Michael DiPietro ($811,667)

AHL BURIED (1)
Sven Baertschi ($2,291,666)

BUYOUTS (1)
Ryan Spooner ($1,033,333)

DETAILS
Roster Size: 22
Salary Cap: $81,500,000
Bonus Overages: $1,700,000
Cap Hit: $70,343,544
Cap Space: $11,156,456

Nine for Pietrangelo and two for a back-up goalie anyone?

But when you give up 3 assets for 1 asset, what about the overall loss of depth??

While I am all for upgrading our defence, we MUST clean out 3 of the 4 shit-contracts before we look at player upgrades that hurt our depth.

Pens trading Hornqvist (3 yrs left) to Florida for Matheson who has 6yrs left on contract.

But not finalized according to LeBrun.
For whatever reason, I'm told this trade hasn't gone through yet. Not sure if it has to do with the fact Hornqvist has a full no-trade clause or not.
*update* lol
Lebrun:
Colton Seviour and Mike Matheson to Pittsburgh for Hornqvist, sources say

Pens writer:
Seth Rorabaugh
Tristan Jarry indicated he and his teammates have been told to prepare for training camp to start on Nov. 15.
Training camp November 15th, means a December start to the season, makes sense, they should have a shortened season so we get back to a normal schedule again with a July 1st UFA, 2021 training camp Sept.

They can do this by starting the season with a Canadian division and three U.S. divisions. Canadian teams can just play each other at least to start the season. Then they don’t have to worry about the border opening. If the border doesn’t open in time the Canadian teams can just repeat playing each other all season. Not ideal, but it could work. At the end of the season take the top four Canadian teams into the playoffs, whether in a bubble playoffs again or not.

This might work, but the border being closed is only one problem. The other is fans; when will fans be allowed to go the rinks? Many NHL teams need ticket revenues to be viable, so likely their owners will not want to operate without fans in the stands.

If they do decide to play without fans, does the league ask for salary concessions from the players? Or does escrow deal with this, ie if revenue is down 50% does escrow automatically mean players will get about 50% of their usual salary?

We won’t find out about NHL and border opening until after Nov 4th.
