If Benning and the Canucks can hold out a while, till the realization of smaller then "the norm" term lengths and salaries to all players up for renewal, that would be ideal.
See, this is what I'm talking about.
Mick, I don't care what planet you're from, but we speak the Queen's English here.

Sounds like a decent amount of teams are considering internal salary caps of $70-75 million, in addition to the salary and staffing cuts that have been occurring, so you have to wonder how much this impacts the negotiations with Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli. I'd expect things to tighten up further between now and the free agent window opening. Would make moving a Sutter or Baertschi contract tougher but might be slightly easier to dump Eriksson.
If it's any consolation, there are teams in worse shape then we are in regard to hard choices. Which GMs will be first in setting the trend in cost cutting. If Benning and the Canucks can hold out a while, till the realization of smaller then "the norm" term lengths and salaries to all players up for renewal, that would be ideal. Patience is difficult though.
I agree. If they can show some patience now, even at the risk of losing someone to a stupid overpay, and move even one guy out without too much damage, it could be a much better than expected offseason. It's going to be a game of musical chairs for UFAs and RFAs as Burke said and players may just have to consider where they want to play rather than attempt to wring every last dollar out of the market or risk not being in a good spot finding a team. Canucks are becoming a preferred destination again so it bodes well.

Capitals GM Brian MacLellan says he expects Braden Holtby to go to free agency. Given Washington's cap situation, not really a surprise.

There are more...IMO. Markstrom will have to sign at 4 to 4.5. million per, if he wants a retirement style contract. That's the safe thing to do
and what I think he''ll do.
The other way he could approach it is to use someone like Holtby's expiring contract as a template. No way that works now. Nada chance.

Holtby’s contract signed ages ago has fuck all to do with the contract Markstrom will sign.

New Brodin deal for Wild opens door to trade Dumba to Canucks
The Canucks would surely be suitors for Matt Dumba's defensive talents, but it would take a player like Brock Boeser to land the veteran defenceman.
