The distaste is everywhere..
What a breath of fresh air that Leaves HFboards is compared to the Canucks board!

But someone raised an interesting point - if Marner holds out, due to LTIR and the compressed cap hit of his eventual contract, he could sign an un-matchable offer sheet on Dec 1 that would be below the 4x1sts threshold.

Wouldn't have happened with Nylander because he is so grossly overpaid, but will someone take a flyer on Marner at something under $10.5 and only give up 2x1sts, 2nd and 3rd?

OR , would somebody give Marner his 2-3 years at $8.45 mil and only give up one 1st, one 2nd and one 3rd?
Yeah, Leaves are gonna hafta sign him or trade him by the first day of the season.

(and Marner's camp knows this)

EDIT: Well maybe not quite THAT soon exactly

If someone offered $8.5 couldn’t the Laughs just match it, or was that a pro rated amount???

It gets harder and harder for Leaves to match after the 1st day of the season.

It's complicated, it's got to do with then being near the cap and be needing to use LTIR.

But it's really because after the season starts any contract signed inflates the AAV for Season One

... while LTIR space remains the same.

Hmmm this is tough, just trust me it gets harder for the Leaves this year lol

(unlike the situation they were in last year with Nylander)

I am pretty happy watching the laffs shed 1st round picks to get rid of crappy contracts.

Any they still have no goalie and barely improved their defence for one season before they all split Stupidville.

Why was it different with Nylander? Were they not over the cap due to LTIR last season?

If Marner were to sign a $10M AAV contract on Dec 1st the inflated Year One cap-hit would be ~ $15M.

Recall last year Nylander signed a $6.9M AAV deal on Dec 1st and inflated Year One cap-hit was $10.3M.

Last year however Leaves had the (non-LTIR) cap room to deal with the inflated Year One cap-hit.

Why would Dubas trade a 23 year-old when his value is at it's lowest? He shot 5% last season. Kid is guaranteed to have a career year. That would be dumb.

Some of those teams can't afford to spend higher than they are right now.
