Yeah, well it's in most people's plans to take a shit at some point during the day. But when all of a sudden you are standing there in the middle of the room shitting your pants you should probably react to it rather than just stand there because you planned to do it later. The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 10:05 pm Benning doesnt seem like a reactionary gm. Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
Re: Time for a new G-Man?
I don't really see the need to panic.
Pretty much every team is going to have a hard time adjusting when their starting goalie goes down.
Demko is a great backup and a great prospect, but he is not ready to carry the team.
It made perfect sense to have Marky and Demko as a tandem. Marx varrying the heavy load and Demko being eased into the game.
Two or three more seasons with Markström as the starter and then shifting over to Demko. I'm all for it.
In the long term the current situation may come out as a good experience for Thatcher. He has tried what it feels like being the #1 goalie on an NHL team, he can hopefully grow from this and start adjusting to be ready for it full time two or three years from now.
What we can hope for now is th eteam rallying around Demko and helping him, while he himself gradually becomes more comfortable with the situation. All hope isn't lost yet. We can still make the playoffs. And if we don't, there's always next season.
This is a young team now. Most players that come back will be better, stronger, more experienced. And more determined.

Still, if you absolutely want to replace the GM, I think Per Kenttä could be your man.
Not just because of his excellent first name, but because he has shown himself to be a very shrewd and effective GM.
This 38-yo was a fairly crappy goaltender, with juist a handful of games in the Swedish third and second tier leagues.
But then he went into coaching. First as assistant coach for Asplöven, then as their coach, then as GM/head coach and eventually just GM.
He took this crappy third tier team, raised them to the top of their league and then in 2012 to the next level, Hockeyallsvenskan.
Not by hiring or acquiring star players, but by building a team, where all players matter and there's no weakest link.
Then in 2017 he was recruited by Oskarshamn. A perennial Hockeyallsvenskan team that never had played in the SHL. They finished 9th out of 14 teams the season before he arrived. In his first year they finished 7th, and the very next season they got promoted to the SHL. A total surprise for everyone in Swedish hockey. Once again - no star players, but a solid team with no weak links with a budget close to th eaverage of Hockeyallsvenskan.
This year he is in charge of Björklöven. They last played in the SHL in the 2000/01 season, and have been struggling to get back ever since. At no time have they been closer to achieving that than now. They won the regular season with a record shattering 121 points, 12 more points than the old all time record. And despite winning the league in style, their best points scorer was 10th in the league, their second best 12th, and they only had one more player in the top 30 of a 14 team league.... Once again he has built a team that lacks star players, but is solid throughout.
In their second to last game of the regular season, against Timrå, that came in third, the coach rested four of their best players, and they still won. This is a surprisingly strong team, without any real star player.

If Björklöven goes all the way and is promoted to the SHL, I think Kenttä must be nominated to some sort of Nobel Prize of hockey management.
That would be the third time a team that he is GM of is promoted in the system. And he is still just 38 years old.

18 straight games now with no even strength goals from Bo Horvat. That’s putrid

He should have more other then on the PP for sure but his second line partners generally consist of a washed up but rich, 34 yr. old overratedChef Boi RD wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:43 am 18 straight games now with no even strength goals from Bo Horvat. That’s putrid
Swedish player and a fairly heavy set X-LAer who has an on and off switch that no one can find. Not even himself.
But your right. It's an unbelievable stat considering the way he used to drive to the net and score the beauty's that got on the highlight reels.

To be honest I’m glad he’s not doing the put on the blinders net drive like a winger. Bo needed to start playing like a centreMicky wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 9:55 amHe should have more other then on the PP for sure but his second line partners generally consist of a washed up but rich, 34 yr. old overratedChef Boi RD wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:43 am 18 straight games now with no even strength goals from Bo Horvat. Green apparently has decided to use Horvat as his 'shut-down' guy. He was put against MacKinnon all night against Colorado. Hard to get even-strength points when you're trying to shut down the opposition. Opportunities to poach on a top-line's mistakes in the neutral zone are few these days.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:43 am 18 straight games now with no even strength goals from Bo Horvat. So if you're going to have your '2nd line' be your 'shut-down' line, WTF are the other lines supposed to do?? If Sutter isn't a shut-down centre, what the hell is his role in the team?

It’s idiotic. I guess Sutter and Beagle’s role is supposed to be a shutdown centre against their own team.Lancer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 2:19 pmGreen apparently has decided to use Horvat as his 'shut-down' guy. All the pissing and moaning about Horvat yet no one is talking about the match ups, the times he is put out in the defensive zone or the fact he sometimes has LE as a line mate. Time for Green to go and get a coach who puts players where they belong and start holding all more accountable.

What? it's no different than Patrice Bergeron line vs MacKinnon's line.Lancer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 2:19 pmGreen apparently has decided to use Horvat as his 'shut-down' guy. Only difference is Boston's coach also put's the best wingers with Bergeron as well, while Green puts checking wingers on Bo's line well notably Loui Eriksson. Pearson at least is putting up respectable points (45) with 21 goals so far. With four Selke Trophies already on his loaded resume, Patrice Bergeron is no stranger in going toe-to-toe with some of the most dynamic lines in the NHL — with the B’s center often tasked with taking draws against the likes of Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, John Tavares and Auston Matthews while shutting down some potent forward trios.
It’s that two-way ability that has lifted Boston’s top line of Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak into the conversation as the best forward group in the league, with the trio just as prone to lighting up an opposing defense as it is stymieing scoring chances down the other end of the ice.
https://www.bostonsportsjournal.com/201 ... days-bout/
Beagle/Sutter are the depth penalty kill beasts to help alleviate some of the hard minutes PK'ing, blocking shots etc so Bo can get more scoring opportunities. Beagle, Sutter, Motte currently take the lions share of penalty kill minutes for forwards, arguably some of the hardest minutes in a game.
I'm guessing a different coach would put Virtanen or Toffoli with Pearson-Horvat full time or even Boeser when he returns, Toffoli actually has proven to be a superb two-way responsible winger while providing excellent scoring ability. Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli line would an exemplary scoring/checking line vs the MacKinnon's, McDavid's etc.
