Who has said this?
Pretty much everyone.

I mean, just look at what he already has achieved, first look at his last (and actually also first) season in the SHL:

SHL Best Junior
SHL Best Plus/Minus (+27)
SHL Champion
SHL Forward of the Year
SHL Most Assists by Junior (32)
SHL Most Goals by Junior (24)
SHL Most Goals Playoffs (10)
SHL Most Points (56)
SHL Most Points by Junior (56)
SHL Most Points Playoffs (19)
SHL Most Valuable Player
SHL Playoffs MVP (Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy)
SHL Rookie of the Year
Swedish Forward of the Year
U20 WJC Silver Medal
World Championship Gold Medal

At 19 years of age, he won the SHL regular season scoring title while beating the all time record for points in a season for a junior player (ie under 20) set by Kent "Magic Man" Nilsson in 1975/76!
He had 56 points. The second best player had 54. The second best rookie had 34. The second best junior player had 21.
Also note that Pettersson missed 8 games due to participating in the WJC.
Otherwise he probably would have scored 10 more points, as he averaged 1.27 PPG over the season! :mex:

He then went on to win the scoring and the goal scoring titles in the playoffs, of course setting new rookie and junior records in doing so, while leading his team to the championship.

He was named league MVP and playoffs MVP, and of course also best rookie, best junior, best SHL forward and best Swedish forward (the latter usually being awarded to some NHLer).

He won gold at the Swedish and the World championships.
He got silver medals from the WJC and the Champions Hockey League.

At 19.

Then on to next year.

With 66 points he obliterated the all time points record for a Canucks rookie in the season he turned 20.
The previous record (60 points) was set by 31 year old Ivan Hlinka in 1981 and tied by 21 year old Pavel Bure in 1992.
Not only was did Pettersson score more points than Hlinka and Bure, he was younger then them and he had a higher PPG average; 0.93 for Pettersson compared to 0.83 for Hlinka and 0.92 for Bure.
He made the NHL Allstar Game, as a rookie, and won the Calder Trophy, as best rookie.

And he wowed everyone. Including Gretzky.

At present he has 21 points in 18 games, which would translate to a 95 point pace over 82 games.

Yeah, I think we may be talking generational talent.

LOL!

In my opinion the last actual "generational" talent was Lemieux and there hasnt been one since. That includes Forsberg btw.

The term is thrown around so flippantly

I thought generational talent meant best of his/her generation?

Or possibly "a level of talent you only see once in a generation".

Lemieux was born in 1965, so I think it's safe to say there's a new generation playing hockey now. :hmmm:

Lemieux may have been the best of Generation X, but who is the best millennial?
Should Petey be considered a millennial or post-millennial, btw?

I'd like to think that both Orr and Gretzky were generational, but Orr born in 1948 and Gretzky born in 1961 both qualify as boomers in American terminology. :o

That is just weird.

In Sweden we definitely consider people born in the 40's as belonging to a different generation than those born in the 1960's. :|

Should a player have more than one NHL season under his belt to be considered 'generational'?

Absolutely.

Petey has generational talent, but he has yet to prove himself.
Just Calder isn't enough. They hand those out every year.

He needs a few more trophies - especially Art Ross and Hart - a couple of cups and an Olympic gold.

But he'll get there.

Just be patient. :drink:

And look at some of his highlight reel goals while you wait.

He'll probably reach his prime when he's 25.

I'm still pissed the Italians got the 2026 winter olympics!
Stockholm should have had it.

It isnt the best of the crop. Its indicative of talent that may (or may not even) come along once in a generation.

The last player i have watched who was on another level compared to his peers was Mario. Who else can possibly be mentioned in the same sentence?

eg Gretzky:
It’s clear in those games Gretzky’s seen of Pettersson, he’s been very impressed, as he not only sees a little bit of himself in the 2017 NHL Draft’s fifth-overall pick, but also a little bit of Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, another one of Gretzky’s favourite players to watch.

“A guy like Pettersson plays probably more in line with the way Sidney plays or even the way I played in that he’s gotta utilize his eyes and his hockey sense and rely on his instinct and ability on the ice because he’s not a big guy.”
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/way ... ey-crosby/

H Sedin:
“He’s really impressive,” Sedin said. “He plays the game in a way that you can’t really compare him to the other players on the team because he can do it all.”
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/hen ... rsson-can/

Lidström:
Q Can he become one of our greatest players of all time?
"I definitely think so. If he just gets to stay healthy and avoid serious injuries i think he will have an incredible carreer. "
https://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/ ... v-ikonerna

He's the first player since Ovechkin to score at least 25 goals in his rookie season, and in the last 25 years Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin and Pettersson are the only players to reach 50 points in 50 games or less.

I mean, sure, it's too early to know for sure, but the sky is the limit for this guy.

And btw, it's his 21st birthday today, so now he can buy liquor in the USA... Congrats Petey!

Lidstrom is an all time probably top 5 player in the game. Forsberg probably top 15. Then you have guys like Salming, Sundin, the twins. Petey would do real well to be a top 3 player in the history of Swedish hockey.

Doyle thinks Pettersson is a scrub. But loves Ryan Stanton
“Tyler Myers is my guy... I was taking to Scotty Bowman last night and he was bringing up his name, and saying he’s a big guy and big guy need big minutes to play, he is playing great for ya… and I agree with him… He’s been exceptional” - Bruce Boudreau
