Re: The Official CC "All Thing Leaves" thread
The other day Zaitsev demanded a trade out of Pig Town.
(told the Russian media it's because of the fans)
Tonight Kypreos tells us Marleau wants out because his wife can't stand Pig Town.
It appears players seem to hate Toronto because of Torontonians.
No doubt about it, Matthews, Marner, and Nylander will walk as UFAs in 5 years...

Thanks for responding. But why blame the last GM when the current one cannot handle pressure?
William put Kyle in a headlock and would not let go till he said uncle.
Just saying, Mitch may have been watching, taking notes, absorbing the atmosphere.
Now, he's up to bat.
What's Dubass gonna do? May I make a suggestion;

If Marleau wants out this bodes very well for the Leaves. $6M of cap space is nothing to sneeze at. I'm betting this is internal pressure and not a family thing.....or if it is, it's because Marleau's family is pissed off because of internal pressure.Strangelove wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:39 pm The other day Zaitsev demanded a trade out of Pig Town.

Not sure who is going to happily take on that contract though without sending something close to 75% of the same cap hit back to Pig Town.

I think the Zaitsev contract will be a lot tougher to move than the Marleau contract.Mëds wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 9:15 am If Marleau wants out this bodes very well for the Leaves. $6M of cap space is nothing to sneeze at. After July 1st Marleau will be owed $2.75M in real dollars with a $6.25M cap hit for just one year.
(note half of his bonus is due July 1st, the other half in December)
After July 1st Zaitsev will be owed $19.5M in real dollars with a $4.5M cap hit for 5 more years.
Both these players are ~ $2M players and this point (well Marleau might be completely done by next season).
(please note Tavares, Matthews, Nylander, and soon Marner also overpaid by $2M each)
Anyway, the extra term on the Zaitsev contract will cost a lot more to unload for sure.
It will be interesting to see what the Leaves will have to fork over to dump these two
... as they continue to sacrifice the future for the now.
Last year they gave up 2 of their top 3 prospects (Grundstrom+ Durzi) along with their 1st this year for Muzzin.
Last year they also let JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Leivo, McElhinney go with nothing coming back in return.
(this year it's Gardiner, Hainsey, and Ennis)
So yeah, a round-one-and-done team busy torching their future, next up more futures gone to dump Marleau/Zaitsev.

Re: The Official CC "All Thing Leaves" thread
The reason I think Marleau is going to be harder to move is that regardless of real dollars, his cap hit is still $6.25M. The rumor is that his family has gone back to their home in San Jose and he wants to be closer to the west coast for them.Strangelove wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 11:04 amI think the Zaitsev contract will be a lot tougher to move than the Marleau contract.Mëds wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 9:15 am If Marleau wants out this bodes very well for the Leaves. $6M of cap space is nothing to sneeze at. Vancouver will have zero interest in Marleau.....if Benning is as smart as you and the Dude always say he is anyways.
Edmonton would be wise to take Marleau if they could divest themselves of some other crap contracts first, but they can't.
Calgary can't do it. See James Neal.
LA, San Jose, and Anaheim, are not going to have the cap space to take on that cap hit in a player of that age, and it would be totally counter to their direction currently. So unless Toronto is throwing in at least a 2nd round pick or something I don't see them as options.
Arizona is actually closer to the cap than anyone would expect, and they need to start building towards being competitive instead of just the garbage team perennially in the basement that takes everyone's unwanted retirement contracts just to load up on picks that they will eventually squander by drafting poorly or trading their young drafted players away after a couple of seasons.
Vegas isn't signing anyone at this point as they are over the cap.
So that leaves Dallas and maybe Colorado?
Zaitsev is a top-4 right dman. They are a coveted commodity, and he will only be 28 with 5 years to go, and if he bounces back even a smidge with a new team then they have a bargain contract in their top-4 with him only costing $4.5M until he's 32 years old.....which is perfect timing for a new contract for that kind of player because you know if he's going to be worth keeping at the probably raise he asks for. Either that or he gets demoted to the bottom pairing and is paid accordingly.
If Marleau is only owed $2.75M in real dollars, there's a very real possibility that he simply retires if a trade cannot be found.

Zaitsev is not a top 4 D man Mëds. Not even on Vancouver. And he isn’t coveted.

Nikita Zaitsev isn't worth much. Hutton is as good, and that aint saying much.Blob Mckenzie wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 12:00 pm Zaitsev is not a top 4 D man Mëds. Not even on Vancouver. And he isn’t coveted.

But let's not forget, the source on Marleau waiving is Nick Kypreos, now the MLSE-owned media is running with the story. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Or hey... maybe he wants to give the Leaves more cap room so his lil buddy Mitch gets more $$ on his new contract.
Still gonna hafta attach this year's 2nd or Liljegren to him to move him though.
(not sure if the flailing/failing Liljegren would do the trick)
I'll bet teams will want Leaves 2020 1st rounder or Sandin attached to Zaitsev though.
(they don't have their 2019 1st any longer)

Re: The Official CC "All Thing Leaves" thread
If they can move both Zaitsev and Marleau, without retaining and without taking a bad contract back, it will go a long way to alleviating their cap crunch. They still have work to do getting enough players signed though but it makes it more plausible. To do that, as Doc suggests, is going to cost them picks and or prospects.
The Sharks may take Marleau back after his bonus is paid.
Zaitsev will garner interest for someone desperate for a righty but it will cost. His production dwindled after he was taken off the PP. A team that wants to have him as their RHS on the PP may be willing to take the risk. For the right price.
Teams that miss out on the July 1st bonanza are known to do stupid things in an attempt to keep up with the Jones.
