Some people just know their hockey.
Even if they root for Toronto.

Check out this scouting report by a Toronto fan back in 2017:

Good thing they didn’t listen to him! :drink:

Thought the same, thank god he fell into our lap. The draft really is him and the 2 D men selected right before him.

Yeah you'd definitely prefer Willy as a cellmate if you were doing a dime for some real nasty shit.

This may be revisionist history on my part, but I remember thinking that it would be dangerous to have a top 2 pick in the draft, because the "consensus" top 2 picks were underwhelming, and that's a lot of weight on the shoulders of a prospect.

But hasn't it come out (Wids?) that Benning would have taken Petersson with the top pick regardless of the lottery?

I don’t know about that. Wasn’t there a lot of smoke about them really liking Cale Makar too?

A couple of misguided posters used to repeat how awful that draft was. It was actually a decent draft. Some good players that are actually making a big impact in the league today.

It’s the worst kept secret - the Canucks were selecting Elias 1st overall. They had the two defenceman ranked after Pettersson

1. Pettersson
2. Makar
3. Heiskenen
4. Brannstrom
5, Thomas
6. Hischier
7. Suzuki
8. Glass
9. Chytl
10. Poehling
11. Valimaki
12. Andersson
13. Necas
14. Frost
15. Rasmussen
16. Mittlestadt
17. Tippett
18. Comtois
19. Norris

And if in some kind of fantasy, we actually won that lottery, and picked Petey 1st overall, the media would have ROASTED him out of town.

On the spot.

Lost his job over it.
