Downgrading?
Blob's Vancouver Canucks have drafted 15 times in the top 68 over the past 5 seasons.

Hey if you don't like that number, you are welcome to choose another and post your research.
68 happens to be my second favorite number.
Anyhoo, no team has drafted more players in the top 68 over the past 5 years than Om's Vancouver Canucks.
Seeing as the Canucks have been in the basement pretty much since Benning arrived, of course that means they're likely to have more picks in the "top-68". The 7-8 worst teams would have one extra pick!
Picks in the first three rounds since 2014 (give or take )
Anaheim: 17
Boston: 16
Buffalo: 18
Calgary: 11
Carolina: 18
Chicago: 17
Colorado:14
Columbus: 17
Dallas: 13
Detroit: 20
Edmonton: 13
Florida: 15
Los Angeles: 13
Minnesota: 10
Montreal: 17
Nashville: 13
Jersey: 15
Islanders: 14
Rangers: 15
Senators: 13
Flyers: 19
Coyotes: 23
Pittsburgh: 9
Sharks: 13
St Louis: 12
Tampa: 18
Toronto: 18
Vancouver: 15
Vegas: 7
Washington: 11
Winnipeg: 14
So yeah, more than a third of the league has drafted more in the top-3 rounds than Vancouver over the past 5 seasons. But I see why you did that, if you made it an even playing field, it wouldn't suit your narrative.

One of those 2nd round picks for Vancouver was a gift from the NHL

Thank you, again I ask... WHAT DOWNGRADING OF PICKS.Island Nucklehead wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 1:07 pm So yeah, more than a third of the league has drafted more in the top-3 rounds than Vancouver over the past 5 seasons. (let's not forget why we're having this conversation!)
Let's try picks in the top 37 over the past 5 drafts:
ANAHEIM DUCKS 5
ARIZONA COYOTES 8
CALGARY FLAMES 4
EDMONTON OILERS 6
LOS ANGELES KINGS 3
SAN JOSE SHARKS 5
VANCOUVER CANUCKS 9
VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 4
COLORADO AVALANCHE 6
DALLAS STARS 6
MINNESOTA WILD 4
NASHVILLE PREDATORS 3
ST. LOUIS BLUES 7
WINNIPEG JETS 6
CAROLINA HURRICANES 8
COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS 6
NEW JERSEY DEVILS 6
NEW YORK ISLANDERS 7
NEW YORK RANGERS 5
PHILADELPHIA FLYERS 10
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS 1
WASHINGTON CAPITALS 4
BOSTON BRUINS 8
BUFFALO SABRES 9
DETROIT RED WINGS 8
FLORIDA PANTHERS 7
MONTREAL CANADIENS 6
OTTAWA SENATORS 7
TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 6
TORONTO MAPLE leaves 7
As you can see, only 1 team (Flyers) drafted more than Canucks in the top 37 since Jimmy arrived.
And just look at those numbers, if most of those teams just missed the cutoff, they're still not even close.
Again I ask... WHAT DOWNGRADING OF PICKS.

Well I think the point is that Benning has done a decent job keeping picks, even though he has trade a slew he has recovered a slew. Sure it could be better but it’s not as dire as some would suggest.
Yes, the NHL gifted us a 2nd. Let’s not count that though.

Blob and IN are conflicted beyond reason. They are children having temper tantrums at a toy store.

Re: The Bubbles and Dud review every GM move thread
I'd bet on the Canucks core over the pure analytics teams and pure tanker teams.
Buffalo, Oilers, AZ, Florida off the top.
I'd reckon if the Canucks indeed sign EK we'd be ahead of even Toronto and their trash defense & everyone knows defense wins, but even if not, lets take a peak.
Sabres Eichel-Mittelstadt-Reinhart-Dahlin-Risto (how the tf are these guys garbage? - I guess goaltending and Risto being the worst dman in the league defensively and Eichel not being true top tier.
Oilers McDavid-Draisaitl-......
AZ Keller-Dvorak-Galchenyuk-Stepan-ELO-Chychrun
Panthers Huberdeau-Barkov-Trochek-Ekblad
Canucks Pettersson-Boeser-Horvat-Hughes
DEMKO seals the deal
TRUE franchise #1C - True #1 RW, True #2C, True #1 dman QB Hughes and a franchise goalie.
those guys will make everyone around them much better.

He’s remained around average when it comes to number of draft picks, which some find disappointing for a rebuilding team that’s gone through massive turnover since he arrived. That’s all.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 4:37 pm Well I think the point is that Benning has done a decent job keeping picks, even though he has trade a slew he has recovered a slew. Gillis horrendous handle of the franchise of locking in vets especially into NTC's.
AND a owner hellbent on making the playoffs as that's what was Benning's first GM job when he was hired after 2014.....thus to make the 2015 playoffs as per requested of the bosses. ( think of it, a former GM locked up the vets with NTC Sedins - a fan favourite - future HHOF - gotta give them one last run...but failed.
then was left of all the No-Trade-Clauses contracts of Gillis to deal with of all the 2011 vets, with no easy trades of the vets there - consequently which gave Benning little value to deal with, hell even Alex Edler is still flexing his NTC from Mike Gillis.

Benning DID get picks in return for a lot of players (Kesler, Bieksa, Garrison, Lack). How he used (or didn’t) use them, and what we have to show for those moves, is where people find fault.

I believe you have the worst reply in the history of CanucksCorner..........& that's pretty bad...basically didn't have no quality execution, no refutable evidence of anything.Island Nucklehead wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2019 3:05 amLiterally none of this is relevant to this discussion.

How's this:
Benning was able to trade Kesler, Bieksa, Garrison, Burrows and Hansen, all of whom had some form of trade protection. He failed to move Hamhuis, and Edler, but these guys would have gotten NTC's from any GM, especially considering how good their AAV were.
This might explain why he targeted Bonino+Sbisa in the Kesler trade, or the Miller and Vrbata signings, but it does not explain the brutal Gudbranson deal, or the desire to flush picks for the likes of Prust, Pouliot, Pedan, Larsen etc. etc.AND a owner hellbent on making the playoffs as that's what was Benning's first GM job when he was hired after 2014.....thus to make the 2015 playoffs as per requested of the bosses. ( think of it, a former GM locked up the vets with NTC Sedins - a fan favourite - future HHOF - gotta give them one last run...but failed.
Already dealt with. If we were talking about the return for some of these guys I would concede that Benning was challenged to find good value. But the fact is he was able to move them, often for picks and prospects. That he turned around and pissed away most of the returns he did get, that's all on Benning.then was left of all the No-Trade-Clauses contracts of Gillis to deal with of all the 2011 vets, with no easy trades of the vets there - consequently which gave Benning little value to deal with, hell even Alex Edler is still flexing his NTC from Mike Gillis.
