Career Milestones 2019/2020

Post by Per »

OK, so what can we hope for this upcoming season?

Quinn Hughes will hopefully have a good rookie season. Can he sneak into the top fifteen Canucks of all time?

Rk Player__________ GP G_ A_ TP
.1 Elias Pettersson….... 71 28 38 66
.2 Pavel Bure….......... 65 34 26 60
.3 Ivan Hlinka….......... 72 23 37 60
.4 Trevor Linden…....... 80 30 29 59
.5 Dennis Ververgaert.. 78 26 31 57
.6 Rick Blight….......... 74 25 31 56
.7 Dale Tallon….......... 78 14 42 56
.8 Brock Boeser…........ 62 29 26 55
.9 Dixon Ward….......... 70 22 30 52
10 Thomas Gradin…..... 76 20 31 51
11 Jocelyn Guevremont 75 13 38 51
12 Patrik Sundstrom….. 74 23 23 46
13 Lars Molin…........... 72 15 31 46
14 Igor Larionov…....... 74 17 27 44
15 Don Tannahill…....... 78 22 21 43

There are only two defensemen in this list, Tallon and Guevremont, so perhaps we should just look at rookie d-men, but let's set the bar high to begin with! 8-)

Pettersson had a points per game average of 0.93 last season and just narrowly squeezed past Bure's 0.92 for best of all time*.

*not counting players having played less than two games

I have high hopes for the new core.

Can any of Petey, Boeser or Horvat break into the top fifteen of all time in points scored in one season?
All it takes is 86+ points. 90 will have you tied for tenth place.

Pettersson's best so far is 66, Horvat's 61 and Boeser's 56.

Rk Player_________ Season GP G_ A_ TP
.1 Henrik Sedin…..... 2009-10 82 29 83 112

.4 Alexander Mogilny 1995-96 79 55 52 107
.5 Markus Naslund.... 2002-03 82 48 56 104
.6 Daniel Sedin…...... 2010-11 82 41 63 104

12 Stan Smyl…........ 1982-83 74 38 50 88
13 Tony Tanti…....... 1983-84 79 45 41 86
14 Thomas Gradin…. 1981-82 76 37 49 86
15 Thomas Gradin…. 1982-83 80 32 54 86

As for goals... shockingly only fifteen times has a Canuck scored a minimum of 40 goals in a season, and it hasn't happened since the 2010-11 season!
Can any of our current players reach that level this season?
Boeser's best so far is 29 in 62, Pettersson's 28 in 71 and Horvat's 27 in 82.

I think if healthy and if he comes to camp Boeser has a great chance to crack 40 goals. Would love to see him bark out this year.
The only HW the Canucks need

Absolutely! His 29 in 62 translates to 38 ln 82, so if he improves just a little and stays healthy, the sky is the limit! 8-)

Hmmmm.... I checked at nhl.com and got a completely different list...
But comparing the two, my guess is your list has a minimum 40 goals scored criterium, whereas my only filter was minimum 10 games played...

Rk Player________ Pos GP G_ S_ S%
.1 Christian Ruuttu..... C 25 5 19 26.3
.2 Mike Ridley.......... C 112 26 111 23.4
.3 Anson Carter......... R 81 33 146 22.6
.4 Mike Walton......... C 115 44 217 20.3
.5 Darcy Rota.......... L 289 120 611 19.6
.6 Roman Oksiuta...... R 68 21 107 19.6
.7 Mike Keane.......... R 64 8 41 19.5
.8 Elias Pettersson..... C 71 28 144 19.4
.9 Wade Brookbank.... D 52 3 16 18.8
10 Jean-Marc Lanthier R 105 16 86 18.6
11 Danny Johnson...... C 76 16 86 18.6
12 Dan Hodgson........ C 74 16 87 18.4
13 Petr Nedved......... C 222 63 345 18.3
14 Ian Kidd.............. D 20 4 22 18.2
15 Igor Larionov........ C 210 51 281 18.1

If you eliminate all players with less than 40 goals scored, you end up with the list you had, and that's why Petey didn't make the cut. :|

Boeser's best so far is 29 in 62, Pettersson's 28 in 71 and Horvat's 27 in 82.
Goalies size and equipment have a lot to do with lower goal scoring as well. Nowadays, a 6' goalie is considered short in the NHL.

Going back to expectations for Quinn...

25 points would take him to the Canucks' top dozen d-men of all time in scoring.
30 points means top six
34 points means top three
I don't assume we can hope for more than 50, can we? :mex:
Things were different in the previous millennium. The best rookie d-man of this century is Ben Hutton with 25. :?

Best scoring rookie d-men in a Vancouver uniform:

# Player __________ Season GP G: A: TP
1 Dale Tallon________ 1970-71 78 14 42 56
2 Jocelyn Guevremont 1971-72 75 13 38 51
3 Dave Dunn ________ 1973-74 68 11 22 33
4 Mattias Ohlund______ 1997-98 77 7 23 30
5 Doug Lidster________ 1984-85 78 6 24 30
6 Jiri Bubla___________ 1982-83 72 2 28 30
7 Rick Lanz___________ 1980-81 76 7 22 29
8 Dennis Kearns _______ 1971-72 73 3 26 29
9 J-J Daigneault_______ 1984-85 67 4 23 27
10 Jiri Slegr __________ 1992-93 41 4 22 26
11 Ben Hutton ________ 2015-16 75 1 24 25
12 Bob Dailey_________ 1973-74 76 7 17 24

Looking strictly at goals scored, 6 would be enough to land in the top ten, 9 would be the best of this century:

# Player___________ Season GP G
1 Dale Tallon________ 1970-71 78 14
2 Jocelyn Guevremont 1971-72 75 13
3 Dave Dunn ________ 1973-74 68 11
4 Alexander Edler_____ 2007-08 75 8
5 Mattias Ohlund______ 1997-98 77 7
5 Rick Lanz___________ 1980-81 76 7
5 Bob Dailey__________ 1973-74 76 7
8 Doug Lidster ________ 1984-85 78 6
8 Michel Petit_________ 1983-84 44 6

Twelve d-men have scored a game-winning goal in their rookie season (most recently Lee Sweatt in 2010-11).
None has scored two.

Two d-men have scored a shorthanded goal in their rookie season;
Harold Snepts in 1974-74 and
Mark Wotton in 1996-97

Five rookie d-men have averaged more than 0.50 points per game:

# Player___________ Season P/GP
1 Jyrki Lumme ______ 1989-90 0.91
2 Dale Tallon________ 1970-71 0.72
3 Jocelyn Guevremont 1971-72 0.68
4 Jiri Slegr__________ 1992-93 0.63
5 Ian Kidd___________ 1987-88 0.58

It should be noted that Lumme only played 11 games for the Canucks in his rookie season though... :look:

Lol! Yeah, this franchise has not had a plethora of great scoring d-men...

.
.
.

And also, blueliners often take longers to develop, so d-man rookie seasons may not be as shiny as those forwards have.

But hey - let's hope Quinn Hughes changes all that, eh?

At least he should have a decent shot at setting some franchise records!

Two game winning and/or short handed goals and he is in the history books! :)

Btw, Tyler Myers had 48 points in his rookie season, 11 goals and 37 assists.

That's twentieth best in the league, all time, and second best this century (behind Phanouf).

Let's see if Quinn can do better than that! 8-)
