The Bubbles Hargraves and Chef Dud review every GM move thread

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Lol Dud wouldn’t take Marchand or Tkachuk on his team. He prefers Brandon Sutter and Loui Eriksson

It’s called common sense. No math is needed.
No, it does require math. Please show me the odds of a 3rd round pick making an impact in the NHL.
Why are you worried about the odds when there is a "Genius" doing the picking?

Are you implying the "Genius" ' picks will have no greater odds of success than would the picks of any other team in the NHL at that same position?

You and Strange should probably have a little chat.

It's called a false premise.
False premise: Downgrading picks doesn't matter.
False reality.

Downgrading?

Blob's Vancouver Canucks have drafted 15 times in the top 68 over the past 5 seasons.

(and they made the playoffs in one of those seasons)

Whatever suits his narrative I guess. He’s only got one ball so maybe that’s why he chose that number

Hey if you don't like that number, you are welcome to choose another and post your research.

68 happens to be my second favorite number.

Anyhoo, no team has drafted more players in the top 68 over the past 5 years than Om's Vancouver Canucks.

So again I ask... WHAT DOWNGRADING OF PICKS. :mex:

Seeing as the Canucks have been in the basement pretty much since Benning arrived, of course that means they're likely to have more picks in the "top-68". The 7-8 worst teams would have one extra pick!

Picks in the first three rounds since 2014 (give or take )

Anaheim: 17
Boston: 16
Buffalo: 18
Calgary: 11
Carolina: 18
Chicago: 17
Colorado:14
Columbus: 17
Dallas: 13
Detroit: 20
Edmonton: 13
Florida: 15
Los Angeles: 13
Minnesota: 10
Montreal: 17
Nashville: 13
Jersey: 15
Islanders: 14
Rangers: 15
Senators: 13
Flyers: 19
Coyotes: 23
Pittsburgh: 9
Sharks: 13
St Louis: 12
Tampa: 18
Toronto: 18
Vancouver: 15
Vegas: 7
Washington: 11
Winnipeg: 14

So yeah, more than a third of the league has drafted more in the top-3 rounds than Vancouver over the past 5 seasons. But I see why you did that, if you made it an even playing field, it wouldn't suit your narrative.

A good read on Blues GM Armstrong.

https://bleedinblue.com/2018/12/20/st-l ... armstrong/

Notable moves past couple years.

June 23, 2017: Center Brayden Schenn was traded to the St. Louis Blues by the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday for forward Jori Lehtera (cap dump), the No. 27 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2018 draft.

2017/18 season trade deadline - Armstrong said we are not a contender & traded Stastny to Jets for a 2018 1st, 2020 4th and Erik Foley(was a 3rd rd pick).

July 1st, 2018 signed veteran's Perron, Bozak and Johnson. (said signing bozak was a move to shore up center, as there is no guarantee of other moves----but still ended up getting/trading for ROR).

July 1st, 2018 evening - Blockbuster trade (Sobotka, Berglund cap dumps) Thompson, 2019 1st, 2021 2nd. for O'Reilly also agreed to pay his big signing bonus thanks to rich owners, Sabres said price would have went up if they had to pay his bonus.

-So he got rid of some bad contracts but at the cost of draft picks. "After a certain point, the general manager should be able to wash his hands of certain messes."
Despite the faults listed, the Blues have never been bad enough to get those lottery players. So, Armstrong had to be savvy in the draft and the free agent market and then make the occasional trade on top of that. The Blues have rarely had the sustained success as they have seen under Armstrong.
-Kept his beaten up aging defense.
-and goalie Binnington went on fire this midway in season to resurrect the franchise as midway thru this current season things were looking bleak.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
