Lack of leadership certainly seems to be an issue. They are lacking a Larionov, or a Federov.
Re: 2018 Winter Olympics - PyeongChang
Just off talent alone and vets on their Russian squad, they should take it.
Finland and Sweden are usually close knit teams already, they should have well built teams to give Russia a good run.
Canada will have a lot of pride/heart, but will lack the talent to compete.

Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

It will be interesting to see how the league handle players who defect to the Olympics - suspensions? Big fines? Both?
Seems unfair to the fans to suspend the star players (for doing something most people agree with) - the owners likely won't want suspensions, either - so big fines? Enough to keep them home?

Dick Pound accuses the NHL of betraying the players and the fans.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I'm hoping for a rebellion. Ovechkin has said that he intends to play no matter what.
I hope some 20-30 of the biggest stars just flip Bettman the bird and head over to play. Regardless.
What are they going to do? Suspend all the brightest stars from the League? Fine them?
Heck, they're millionaires, all of them. They can take it.

It means the Olympic hockey tournament will get pretty weird.5thhorseman wrote:Does this mean Tryamkin is coming back?!Cornuck wrote:So.... Russia is banned from the Olympics now... Poor Ovechkin.
No NHLers and no Russians. And the Russians have threatened to block foreign KHL players from going as well.

Re: 2018 Winter Olympics - PyeongChang
No Russian hockey players were supposedly involved in the systematic cheating with doping tests the Russians organised in Sochi. This means they could participate, but not as Russia. They would have to play in white jerseys with the Olympic rings as only symbol. No Russian colours, no national symbols. Will they do this?
It's a tough question. The Russians love winter sports, and of course they want to see their players participate, but can they stomach the humiliation of not being allowed to represent Russia?
If they instead boycott the tournament and block all KHL players from going, in breach of IIHF rules (which I wish could be imposed on the NHL...) which says all players should be made available for international play, it will change the Olympic tournament from a B to a C tournament. The preliminary Swedish troop contains twelve KHL players, and in the absence of NHL players the KHLers also form the backbone of the Finnish, Czech and Canadian teams.
