NHL All-Star Game Idea: Stanley Cup Champs vs. Best of Rest
Was wondering what you thought about this idea?
The Stanley Cup winning team would have the right to face the "Best of the Rest" at the All-Star Game in the following season. If the Stanley Cup team from the previous season wins, they get a guaranteed top 5 1st round pick and have a chance of winning the lottery. The reason for this 'prize' for winning, is because it incentives a cup winning team from the previous season to play 1 extra game than the other teams, without it counting towards the standings.
Benefits from this set-up:
1) There is something on the line at the all-star game, and the game will actually be competitive.
2) For the first time ever, we have a chance of seeing "the greatest team ever assembled" play a game.
3) Cup winning teams would have a chance of building a real dynasty. Due to the salary cap, it's extremely difficult for franchises to build a dynasty.......and whether we like it or not, dynasty's sell.
One other caveat: A Stanley Cup winning team has the right to "waive" to challenge playing in the all-star game in the following season. For example, as we saw after 2010, the Hawks ran into massive cap problems and had to dismantle their team. 2011 Hawks were a shell of their 2010 selves and so perhaps in a situation like this, management wouldn't see the point in playing an extra game at the all-star game and getting their clocks cleaned.
If a team chooses to waive, then the all-star game goes back to it's current format for that particular year.

Never going to happen. Bettman wants as many teams represented a possible.
Plus, in your scenario, every team would waive, so they could get a rest - plus they'd have nothing to prove.

Yeah good point about all teams' players being represented.Cornuck wrote:Never going to happen. Bettman wants as many teams represented a possible.

I just figured that the idea of having a guaranteed top 5 pick if one won, would be enough incentive to not rest up.
