Norm was a funny man with his own delivery. Not really my style as I prefer edgy types like Dennis Miller, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Greg Giraldo, Dennis Leary, etc but he was a funny man, gone too young. His roast of Bob Saget is hilarious. Those roasts were awesome watching those comics take each other apart.

"My dad died, and my grandfather died, and my great-grandfather died, and the guy before him, I don't know, I think he probably died," he says. "I come from a long line of death. That's my point. And so I fear it. I fear it a lot."

"What are the odds that a terrorist will attack and kill you? Almost zero, you know. But what are the odds that you will be attacked and killed by your own heart? That's what got my dad. His heart attacked and killed him. He didn't expect it. He was looking for fucking Arabs and shit."

Me too.

I prefer the twisted comedians, borderline nuts, when you can’t tell if they are joking or not, Norm did that well.

Shame he was Bush's WMD bag man with that UN speech. But when the Commander in Chief issues and order...... Ruined an otherwise stellar career.

Agreed. A great statesman and a skilled warrior and military leader, but being coaxed to lie to the UN about WMDs in order to help his boss start an unjust war that killed hundreds of thousands and ultimately lead to the creation of Isis, put a stain on his otherwise spotless reputation.

He probably could have become the first black president of the US, had he run. Polls in 1996 said he would beat Clinton, and polls in 2000 had him ahead of both Bush and Gore. But his wife vetoed a run. I remember her being quoted to say that she didn't doubt he could get elected, but she doubted he could survive four years as president.

But as you say, being caught lying about the WMDs ruined his career.

I still had great respect for the man. I guess he felt he had to do what the president told him to. A sort of misdirected loyalty to his country that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld took advantage of. I also think they knew he was the only one in that group that had the international stature and respect that meant people were likely to believe him.

I remember that old gag:
A man walks into a bar, sees Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney and Powell at a table. He walks up to them and asks what they're doing.
"Oh, well, we're just hatching a plan to kill a million Arabs and a web designer," Cheney says.
"I'm sorry," the guy says. "I don't get it. Why the web designer?"
Rumsfeld pokes Powell in the side and grins:
"See? I told you no one would care about the Arabs!"

Has the USA ever properly thanked it's European pals for accepting the great flood of Muslim refugees fleeing it's war zones?

If it has I must have missed it I guess.

I'm just considering the legacy of Colin Powell.

It's a time of reflection.
