Re: It's getting warm
Snow crab season has been cancelled in Alaska as billions of them, 90%, have disappeared in just two years. King crabs are down too, but not quite as drastically, they can still be found, but the price is sky rocketing.
Scientists believe the reason is a double hit from global warming. Snow crabs need really cold water, and temperature in Alaska is rising at twice the global speed. This has also lead to an increase in large predatory fish in the area, while crabs, who crawl along on the bottom, have a harder time migrating. So while the climate has become less favourable for the crabs, they have also come under greater pressure from predators.
This is not a result of overfishing, crab fishing is highly regulated, but a canary in the coal mine when it comes to what global warming can do to a species that doesn’t migrate easily.
Many family owned crab fishing companies are expected to go bankrupt.

And it’s not just crabs.
In a recent report the WWF indicated that vertebrate populations- mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish – have dropped by 58 percent since 1970. https://www.spartagroup.ca/vertebrates- ... n-demands/
Mostly through habitat loss, as rain forests are razed and turned into farmland, but overfishing and global warming also play an important part.
Herrings are at an all time low in the Baltic.

Last year certain species of salmon were at an all time low in the Pacific NW. They banned fishing for one season. This year they are at record highs.Per wrote: ↑Mon Oct 17, 2022 12:56 am And it’s not just crabs.

Depending on species it takes 2-4 years to see results of any action taken.

T’was from a fish and wildlife consultant where I was working. And my years are off. It would have been 2 years ago that the numbers were low…..time flys and all.rats19 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 12:51 pmWhere you getting this info from Mëds?Mëds wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 12:32 pmLast year certain species of salmon were at an all time low in the Pacific NW. Re: It's getting warm
Yeah, herring in the Baltic is mainly overfishing. They are trawlfishing and basically just vaccuming the entire fisheries. Then those gigantic ships that do it just mince them and sell to Norwegian salmon farmers as feed.
The problem is that in Sweden and Finland we traditionally eat a lot of Baltic herring, but the traditional small scale fishermen along the coast no longer catch any. They are virtually gone.
If we could ban the industrial trawling on international waters, they'd probably bounce back eventually, but the international treaties actually increased the quotas in part of the Baltic in the most recent negotiations. It's madness.
ALso, with all the bigger fish getting caught, the sticklebacks are increasing in number like crazy. Tiny little fish that aren't really good for anything, except papers on gender roles, as the male sticklebacks guard the roe and care for the young. Thing is, the sticklebacks love to feed on the roe from the bigger fish, so this is turning into a vicious circle, with the sticklebacks feasting on the roe of herring and cod, while fewer and fewer herrings and cod are around to mate and - yeah. It's bad. Some of the companies that make fermented herring have gone belly up.

60 Minutes Interviews Population Control Expert Thanos
https://babylonbee.com/news/60-minutes- ... ert-thanos
This week, 60 Minutes host Scott Pelley held a sit-down interview on the universe's ecological sustainability with a figure who has been both dismissed as a doomsdayer and celebrated as humanity's best hope for longevity on earth: Thanos.
"Little one, it's simple calculus. The universe is finite, its resources finite. If life is left unchecked, life will cease to exist. It needs correcting." Thanos spoke to CBS's Scott Pelley in an interview that many onlookers called "ominous" and "awkward." When Pelley pressed the hulking purple figure on "who would do the correcting," Thanos demurred, opting to rub his knuckles and gaze wistfully into the distance, mumbling about "a grateful universe."
In the video, Pelley attempts to ease the tension with light jokes, but is met with sharp glances, outbursts, and declamations. One specific moment has already gone viral for eliciting cringes: Thanos overturned his chair when leaping to his feet to proclaim "I could simply snap my fingers, and they would all cease to exist – I call that mercy!" Scott Pelley chuckled uncomfortably when Thanos drove his point home with a theatrical "snap," eliciting a growl: "You have my respect, Pelley. When I'm done, half of humanity will still be alive. I hope they remember you."
Thanos had agreed to come on the show to promote his book "Cursed With Knowledge: A Small Price To Pay For Salvation," which has drawn criticism as its predictions failed to materialize. The book is famous for quotes including "The battle to feed all of humanity is over…the world will undergo famines," "hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death," and "The hardest choices require the strongest wills."
At publishing time, Thanos had been awarded chairmanship of Stanford University's biology department, a visiting Professorship at the prestigious UC Berkeley, and a visiting editorship at the New York Times.
