Re: TV Shows: What are you watching?
Oh yeah, I forgot about Deer Hunter. Chris Walken was amazing in it.
I don't know what war is like but, I have to say that the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan in the theaters, that first half hour on the beach, man...
The sound and camera work made it seem so real, like you were there, scrambling for your life. The whole theater was shaking, bullets whizzing by, explosions, soldiers getting cut down... my heart was pounding. I'm not ashamed to say I cried a little when that scene ended.
Then the scene with the tanks, the whole place shook. And the street and house battle where the jewish dude gets a knife plunged into his chest? I had nightmares for weeks. That was a great movie but I can't watch too many times.
For WWI, I like all versions of All Quiet on the Western Front. Very poignant.

I dropped Absentia, a snoozer. Trying out Sneaky Pete on Amazon. So far so good

Where Eagles Dare. Clint Eastwood & Richard Burton. Great plot.
But you can't beat Platoon. Berenger, Dafoe, even Charlie Sheen of all people had some great scenes.

Re: TV Shows: What are you watching?
Apocalypse Now Redux, longer slower and funkier. The scene with the Playmates and the scene at the French plantation are wild additions. By far the war story, though the movie plods and the effects are laughable.
The ceiling fan from the opening scene hangs over the bar at Blancanaux Lodge (where we honeymooned). Coppola's resort in Belize. It doesn't work, weird Chinese electric motor.
Dambusters is still a favourite, Patton and Deer Hunter.

Yeah, the book was awesome, it really took you there.
It had me believing the author's true-story claim.
