Damn Eye-Ties!
Sept- = 7
Okto- = 8
Nov- = 9
Dec- = 10
Thus logically the new year ought to start on March 1st, based on the names of the months.
Traditionally most cultures have considered spring the beginning of the new year, so it probably used to be so at some point.

Re: New Years resolutions...be a better you
Doing some research.... the eldest new year celebrations we know of took place in Babylon at the first new moon after the spring equinox. Kind of like Easter, which is thr first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox... The Chinese new year is the second new moon after the winter solistice, so... Februari.. -ish...? The Egyptian new year was tied to the flooding of the Nile. They somehow tied it to the star Sirius to lock in a more specific date though. Seems Egyptians, Phoenecians and Petsians all celebrated the new year somewhere around the autumn equinox and the Greek did it at the winter solistice and the Romans originally did it at the spring equinox.
When Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar he moved the new year celebrations to January 1st, the month being named for the god Janus who has a face at the back of his head as well, so looking forward into the future while simultanously looking back at the past.
During the Middle Ages most of Europe switched back to celebrating the beginning of the new year at the spring equinox, but then in 1582 Gregorus XIII confirmed January first as the official beginning of the year. Should have renamed the months as he did so, to make it more logical. How can september be the 9th month when its name literally tells us it is the seventh month?!
Effing Popes.

Oh, and I’m going to lose weight.
I’ve gained quite a bit since my wife died.
Some people stop eating when they grieve. Some binge out on comfort foods.
Sadly it turns out I belong to the second category.
But I have to start moving forward, and I’ve decided to cut down drastically on carbs after the twelvth night.
Will try to get back to my normal weight before summer.
Other than that I tend to make the same New Year’s resolution every year: I will not take up smoking.

Ive never been one for "resolutions ", for me, its the end of holiday gluttony.
The only resolution i had back in the day, was to start smoking at NYE parties, and take all the smokes of those who quit.

I'm not much for resolutions either. If you want to change something, you can do it any day of the year.
And why call it a resolution? Puts too much pressure on you and you'll probably fail first time anyways. Many worthwhile things take a few attempts.

Damn, did you make a resolution to re-write a thousand rock songs this year?
BTW, by "fuck resolutions" I meant I'm resolving to fuck more...
