Summer parties at the homestead always included Long Islands....
Used to get ultra gunned on that stuff.
Ribs...homemade potato salad...corn on cob...LIIT's...
A little weed.
A little old lady time.
Living the dream....

Re: The fancy cocktail thread
Living the dream indeed, Donster.
Don't forget the Kim Mitchell and them patio lanterns.
Long Island ice tea, Bloody Caesars and Daiquiris, vodka jello shots and a bottle of booze in a watermelon. Summer daze.
Now they have cocktail premixes, but back then we had to buy the cans of baby clams to have the juice for Caesars.
Then it was old lady time... and another kind of clam juice.

I dunno what the other price ranges are, but for the <$30 range I go either El Brugal or Mount Gay eclipse. Both spiced, neither are too funky.
But my only rum highball is a Dark N Stormy, just rum and the spiciest ginger beer (my fave is The Great Jamaican stubby bottles). Rum and coke takes me back to many regrettable nights in undergrad lol
Re: The fancy cocktail thread
Yeah...took jugs of the shit out to Ligthouse Park back in the day....find a little open rock....slip on the Vuarnets....get high....drink Long Islands and then cliff jump all day.
A little Deguello pumping out of the ghetto blaster.
Good times...love to go back for a redo....

Brugal Anejo is the rum I've bought the last few times.
Discovered it while in the Dominican, and enjoyed it since.

Re: The fancy cocktail thread
ESQ & Corn, are these the same rum from the same distiller?
Not a big fan of spiced rums though, the few times I've tried it straight.
Seriously, appreciate all the recommendations. Not surprising from a bunch of effin' drunks
I was expecting some asshole to troll with Bacardi or Capt Morgan...

That is the same one - the bottle has all these piraty-looking strings/netting on it!Carl Yagro wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 8:10 pmESQ & Corn, are these the same rum from the same distiller?

Are you a white rum man? I guess that's what you'd want for a Cuba Libre, right?
Re: The fancy cocktail thread
I personally feel that a Cuba Libre must be made with Havana Club and Coca Cola. Any other combination lacks the savoury ideological cold war clash and should be referred to as Rum & Coke (or Rum and generic cola).Carl Yagro wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 3:47 pm Hey Tops, G&T with lime is one of my staples. Keep a nice bottle of Tanqueray that I use for a classic martini too.
For sure a nice single malt, but I have to have a big block of ice or a cold metal ice cube. I know, I'm a heathen.
My other staple is the good ol' Cuba Libre rum & coke with lime. Any recommendations for a decent bottle of rum? Not cheap but not expensive. I'm not a big rum fan, just for Cuba Libres.
Just can't get into egg nog though. Prefer some Bailey's coffee or something like that.
You need the communist rum mixed with cocacola commercialism, ice to represent the cold war and a twist of lemon the souring of relations.
But that's just my personal opinion.

The drink originated in non Communist Cuba, Bacardi would be appropriate.Per wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 4:24 amI personally feel that a Cuba Libre must be made with Havana Club and Coca Cola. Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Beer: if there is Czech beer available, why drink something else?
Red wine: I either go for a Rioja or some sort of primitivo/zinfandel.
I like a glass of red wine when eating meat, especially some nice cut of beef.
White wine: I generally go for a German riesling, Königsmosel is a favourite.
White wine goes well with sallad or seafood, imho.
Aquavit for shots with eg herring: Rånäs Brännvin or Hallands Fläder.
The former is flavoured with bitter orange and cinnamon, the latter with elderflower.
I seldom drink whisky, but when I do, Ardbeg is a favourite.
But I think originally this was meant to be about cocktails, right?
In the summer I typically go for a mojito or a GT. Both are refreshing and nice to sip on on a hot summer day.
For the mojito I typically use Havana Club Añejo 7 Años, for the GT I have mostly been using Bombay Sapphire East (the one that contains lemongrass and black pepper) but have recently started using a new brand, N|D Mountain Dry Gin.
Oh, and after a nice hot sauna, I often drink a Gin & Grapefruit Tonic, which is a very popular drink in Finland, where they just call it Lonkeru (which is derived from the term Long Drink). My wife loved those, so I'd make one for her and then get one myself as well.
In the winter I don't mind me some Irish coffee or glögg (mulled wine).
But there is also something called Hot Shot, that became very popular at ski resorts in the late 80's:
You take a 6 cl shot glass and fill it with 2 cl Galliano, 2 cl hot strong coffee and top it with lightly whipped cream.
Use a spoon when adding the coffee to keep it layered, then drink while still warm!
Two bartenders came up with this at a ski resort in Åre (birthplace of Henrik Lundquist) and it caught on. Then spread like wildfire first through Scandinavia and then in the Alps. The people at Galliano, who had a rather niche product with a small but steady turnover could not understand why sales suddenly doubled.
Another nice layered coffee drink (you may be detecting some sort of pattern here) is the Barraquito that is popular on the Canary Islands:
Proportions vary, but roughly the same amount of:
condensed milk at the bottom
then add Licor 43
then add espresso
then add frothed milk
Typically served with a sprinkle of cinnamon and some lemon zest.

True, it harks back to the Spanish-American war, but Bacardi....Topper wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 5:29 amThe drink originated in non Communist Cuba, Bacardi would be appropriate.Per wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 4:24 amI personally feel that a Cuba Libre must be made with Havana Club and Coca Cola. And Havana Club also predates the revolution, and is still made on Cuba, so...
