We're All Doomed!™ (the Conquest, War, Famine, and Death Thread)

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Well I think I’d like to hear the thoughts of the likes of 5th and Per.....I mean this is their side of the political fence that wants the government to have this kind of right and power.

I mean the Democrats are the good guys right?

Strawman time again. I am not a socialist that believes the right of the masses trumps those of the individual.
I'm a liberal, by the European definition, which in US terminology is closer to libertarian.

I tend to put greater value on the right of the individual than those of the masses.
Tend to, because there are gray zones.

But for instance, I'm happy with the Swedish approach of recommendations rather than legislation to combat the pandemic.

Also remember my criticism of Guantanamo?

People captured in a war zone can either be prisoners of war, in which case the Geneva convention applies, or suspects of crime, in which case they should be given a court trial as soon as feasible. Locking people up without a trial or pow status is a gross violation of international law and by definition qualifies as a concentration camp.

I'm sure most of the people at Gitmo are scumbags, but that is for a court to decide.
The individual has rights that can not be ignored by a government, whether these people are citizens under that government or not.

There is a reason the US keeps these prisoners at Gitmo rather than on US soil, because that way they can argue that US laws do not apply, but that is bullshit. Both international laws and US laws apply, and the concentration camp at Gitmo is in violation of both.

And the democrats are not necessarily the good guys at all times.
I'm a great supporter of free trade, remember?

Traditionally the GOP have been more reliable when it comes to promoting free trade than the Dems, who have often been courting shortsighted trade union interests over the proven science of economics.

But this refers to traditional conservative republicans, not the Trumpist protectionist crowd, who are worse than the democrats on this issue.

Trump is not really a republican, imho, he has just been using the party as a vehicle for his own purposes, disregarding most traditional republican core values. Instead he has been fostering a sort of nationalistic populism, more reminiscent of traditional fascism, which also shows in his complete disregard for the outcome of the election, most recently captured on tape, when he tries to badger the Georgia republicans to fake the election results and say he won.

I hope the GOP can find its way back to its true values. :|

No I don't think the kinds of powers being suggested in that Fox news article are a good idea in the case of covid; maybe in the case of Ebola yeah. Who wants to preserve the right of some fucker to spread Ebola? What about everyone else's rights?

The article suggested the scope of this law wasn't really clear anyways, which would make it difficult to enforce I would think. Sounds like legislation which is still evolving (which the article also suggested).

As for me being a Dem, I don't think I've ever hitched my horse to that wagon.

It's just too bad that the people can't vote on major issues, rather than for political parties. I know, it can't be done logistically. By voting for a party, you are saying ok to their entire slate. There are issues on which I agree with the GOP and there are issues that I agree with the Dems. Anyway basically I think they all suck and they all just worry about getting voted in. Fuck politicians :scowl: :scowl: .

I agree and disagree. I completely agree that it's too bad people can't vote on major issues. Case in point, Trudeau has committed Canada to the UN 2030 agenda.....that was nowhere in his election campaign platform that I can recall. I'd wager that 99% of Canadians would be against committing to the UN the way he has.

I disagree that it can't be done logistically. With the tech we currently have there's no way it can't be done.....it would be a question of whether it could be done honestly.

I completely agree with your final sentiment.

I think the average person is too stupid for referendums these days. Most people don't research, and just read headlines in their bubble and think they're informed. It happens in small towns who think they can afford massive projects to larger items like Brexit.

I think if you go back even 20 years, this could have worked, but not in today's media climate.

Sad but true. Most of people who voted for Brexit don't even know why and what it means.

Like this hilarious sap who is selling glass eels and expressed his desire for Brexit in a video with a UKIP representative.
Now he is showing some regret.....

No wonder! :D

Eels are an endangered and protected species, and thus international trade with eels is banned under international law.
There is however the possibility of some restricted trade within your domestic market.

Prior to Brexit, this man's "domestic market" was the EU, including countries that want to repopulate rivers where the eels have disappeared and some countries where they think glass eels are a delicious treat. He had a nice little business going.

Following Brexit, his domestic market is the UK, where there is little need to repopulate rivers, I mean, in fact, he is harvesting these glass eels there... and there is hardly anyone eating them. Now he has to lay off most of his staff.

Now, granted, not everyone is quite as stupid as this guy, but ... yeah...

On the Canucks little training camp delay, Sunday Jan 10th 2021...
Ben Kuzma @benkuzma
Reaching out to Dr. Brian Conway of Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre for comment. Developing story.
“Somebody was in close contact with certain members of the Canucks’ entourage — management and players or both — and they are probably doing enhanced testing to ensure that no transmission has occurred."
"I’m potentially reading too much into this, but they talk of a (potential) exposure in the Canucks’ family and that would be my interpretation. In all large North American cities, we still have significant community based transmission of COVID-19."
“This is simply reflecting the entire North American landscape, but NHL players and management are instructed in all public-health regulations and are allowed to circulate in society (home-rink-home) and work environments."
"Enhancements are more testing being done, but it won’t be different than we’re seeing in the general population. For the NHL, advanced contact tracing and testing of asymptomatic individuals is in place on an ongoing basis before they are symptomatic.
"We don't wish this on anyone. We hope everybody follows the rules to the letter, but if we learn from other leagues with an enhanced number of cases like the NFL, this is cleary a cautionary tale."
Not worried yet. Just have to be careful.
