Well it's more like CRISPR on steroids.Cornuck wrote: ↑Sat May 09, 2020 8:07 amYou mean like CRISPR-Cas13?Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 8:27 pm Now this virus was in its early stages, so it wasn't set to make specific changes to human genetic material.
But yes, the Chinese weren't finished yet, so this was like CRISPR with all its flaws Re: random mutations.
And that's the problem (for example, now Mëds could grow a fully-formed penis out of his forehead within a few short years).
The breakthrough in Manila involved next-generation genome sequencing.
Now they had a map... an almost instant map to each individual genome (everyone's genome is at least slightly different).
This breakthrough provides the ability to make the changes quickly and accurately... minus the random mutations.
But as I said, the Chinese weren't finished yet... and it got loose from the lab.
Obviously this tech... once perfected... could be used for the good or the bad.
But with it getting loose... in a raw state.. the COVID survivors could experience bizarre and extreme mutations.
With the other problem being they are now DNA hackable, sitting ducks if you will.
It's a lot easier to install negative changes than positive ones.
What if the Chinese decided to turn every American COVID survivor into a drooling zombie for instance.
Zombie apocalypse anyone? You see the problem.

Here's a long sciency article for those who are interested explaining why mutations are not a problem with COVID19.

They are beginning to think there could be a link between vitamin D insufficiency and the severity of covid-19.
A study (albeit very small sample size) showed that 85% of covid-19 patients requiring intensive care had low levels of vitamin D, compared to 57% of those hospitalised but not needing intensive care. Furthermore, of ICU patients younger than 75, 100% had vitamin D insufficiency.

This could help explain the overrepresentation of Somali immigrants among Swedish corona deaths. Darker skin makes it harder to produce vitamin D from sun exposure, and during the long dark winters even native Swedes tend to get vitamin D insufficiency. We combat this by fortifying milk with vitamins A and D, but most immigrants don’t drink as much milk as Swedes tend to.

Why you shouldn't pin all your hopes on a vaccine ...
https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2020 ... r/12146616
We've never made a successful vaccine for a coronavirus before. This is why it's so difficult
For those pinning their hopes on a COVID-19 vaccine to return life to normal, an Australian expert in vaccine development has a reality check — it probably won't happen soon.
The reality is that this particular coronavirus is posing challenges that scientists haven't dealt with before, according to Ian Frazer from the University of Queensland.
Professor Frazer was involved in the successful development of the vaccine for the human papilloma virus which causes cervical cancer — a vaccine which took years of work to develop.
He said the challenge is that coronaviruses have historically been hard to make safe vaccines for, partly because the virus infects the upper respiratory tract, which our immune system isn't great at protecting.
"One of the problems with corona vaccines in the past has been that when the immune response does cross over to where the virus-infected cells are it actually increases the pathology rather than reducing it," Professor Frazer said.
"So that immunisation with SARS corona vaccine caused, in animals, inflammation in the lungs which wouldn't otherwise have been there if the vaccine hadn't been given."

New research in China shows that coronavirus can remain in the semen of men who have been formerly diagnosed with the illness. This is scary stuff. Covid is in the same family of viruses as HIV.

Some of the studies show C19 being present in sperm, but there is no evidence (yet?) that it is in an active state.
(chances are it would not be active, chances are it would be incapable of causing infection)
