We're All Doomed!™ (the Conquest, War, Famine, and Death Thread)

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

LOL, reminds me of when I lived in Ja. and my father told me about some hooker in a brothel in Kingston named Snowball that he met during his merchant marine days. I interrupted him to say my girlfriend was called Snowflake by her family and asked if I was fucking my sister. Not sure if the old man figured I was bullshiting him or not, but he didn't finish the story.

Btw, with all these states and nations opening up.... you all remember that the 1918 pandemic lasted for three years, right? :?

from the erection thread, but I realized my response fits better here:

It will have diminished in effect and Trumpy-poo will be given some credit there.

(rightly or wrongly)

The economy is already taking off and Floyd rioting is greatly diminished.
I say this rollercoaster ride has barely begun.

If you look at what states in the USA have a death rate per million that is above the average for the USA, this is what you get:
New York 1569
New Jersey 1384
Connecticut 1145
Massachusetts 1067
Rhode Island 754
District Of Columbia 696
Louisiana 634
Michigan 592
Pennsylvania 470
Illinois 467
Maryland 459
Delaware 409
Indiana 344
USA Total 342

So, notice a particular pattern? It's all east coast. Mostly New England-ish.
OK, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois are perhaps considered Midwest, but they're in the northeast corner.
Louisiana is a bit off, but that's all because of Mardi Gras celebrations.
Bit surprised spring break didn't do the same to Florida, to be honest.

Anyway, the virus has barely spread beyond New England. This thing has just begun.

Now that states are beginning to open up while at the same time marches and protestst have spread as wildfire....
Yeah, I think the USA is in for a whole lot worse than what we've seen so far. :(

They also have a bad combo of decentralized government, widespread obesity and diabetes and poorly organised healthcare.
This is probably also why when you compare US states to countries elsewhere, you see a problematic pattern:

Country/state Deaths/million
New York 1569
New Jersey 1384
San Marino 1238
Connecticut 1145
Massachusetts 1067
Belgium 830
Rhode Island 754
District Of Columbia 696
Andorra 660
Louisiana 634
UK 598
Michigan 592
Spain 580
Italy 562
Pennsylvania 470
Illinois 467
Sweden 465
Maryland 459
France 448
Delaware 409
Netherlands 352
Sint Maarten 350
Indiana 344
USA Total 342
Ireland 341
Isle of Man 282
Mississippi 281
Colorado 268
Channel Islands 265
Switzerland 222
Minnesota 214
New Hampshire 210
Canada 208
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Four US states are hit worse than Belgium, the country worst hit in Europe (not counting San Marino and Andorra).
Ten are hit worse than Sweden.
Seventeen are hit worse than Canada.

Remember the scary footage you've seen from Spain and Italy?
Michigan is worse.
Connecticut is twice as bad.
New York almost three times as bad.

And this is before the disease has even really started to spread beyond the east coast.....

Remember, the Spanish Flu stuck around for three years.
Don't expect this to be gone by November.

I would not be surprised to see it slow down a bit over summer, as eg the flu tends to do, but we should expect a second wave this fall, and even though Big Pharma is raising the value of stock in their companies by signalling progress on vaccines, it normally takes at least 18 months to bring a vaccine to market, and then you need to scale up production and distribution and have every single person on earth take that vaccine. And no one has been able to produce an effective vaccine against a corona virus before. They did not manage to do it with SARS or MERS and they haven't been able to do it with the four corona viruses that cause the common cold. In fact, the immunity you get from having had a cold is so weak, you can have it again about a year later, give or take.

I know Trump want this to go away, but it is not very likely that it will anytime soon.
The states that are opening up right now may very well have to impose new lockdowns within a few months.

Yes, it's possible that this will never go away ...

I'm on record agreeing there will be a second wave.

Although, unlike the Spanish Flu, I'm convinced the 2nd wave will be the lesser of the two.

The Spanish Flu eventually mutated its way into oblivion.

This COVID19 will as well...

But I also believe they will produce an effective vaccine in record time.

There has never been as ma$$ive a worldwide effort in the history of mankind.

Yeah, right.

As I've explained before, I'm a centrist, not a leftist.
And I have never read The Tyee.

My guess it was meant to be called The Tree, but the guy who proposed it had a speech impediment... :drink:

Doc paints centrists and center-rights as Antifa. He would fit in well below the 49th. ;)

Yep, coronaviruses mutate quickly that’s why they’ve never really bothered with coronavirus or rhinovirus vaccines. The “novel” side of covid-19 will be done with in the second wave so our immune response should be less severe and have less mortality. The vaccine they develop may end up being something similar to the yearly flu vaccine where they guess what protein markers to vaccinate against, so a new one every year.
