Well, I’m trying to stay off carbs, so no sugar or cereal based products, and I hardly eat any processed foods, but I won’t go full paleo. I mean, at some point you have to ask yourself - is life without cheese really worth living?donlever wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 10:01 amGo all in Paleo and drive less.5thhorseman wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 8:22 am Much of the West is obese anyways. In better news, the warring sides in Yemen have agreed on a cease-fire during Ramadan.
Now finally we may be able to get some food delivered to all those that are starving… oh, wait, it’s Ramadan…

There is a huge global crisis looming over us if the war in Ukraine doesn't end soon.
Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world, accounting for up to 25% of wheat exports in the world and being the leading producer of sunflower oil and sunflower seeds, while also being one of the major producers of corn, rye, barley and soy beans. They're also rank fourth in potato production.
https://www.farminglife.com/country-and ... ts-3584361
Ukraine has the most fertile soil found anywhere. Whereas most of Europe has a few inches of top soil, in Ukraine it goes several meters deep. It's kind of like the prairie, but even more fertile. Hitler had plans of filling railway cars with Ukraine soil and transporting it to Germany...
Africa gets 30% of its wheat from Ukraine.
Also, the fertile area, albeit centred in Ukraine, stretches into southern Russia, while Russia also is the world's main exporter of fertiliser.
So, with a war in Ukraine, that of last year's harvest that is still warehoused in Ukraine is now hard to access, and with electricity going on and off in some areas due to the war, a lot of it has probably already been spoiled.
If the war continues, it is questionable if there will be any serious farming going on, so this years harvest is already in peril. Add to that that it seems the Russians have left mines behind in several of the areas that they have held, which could render farming in some areas impossible (or at least highly dangerous) for years to come.

And apart from the Ukrainian cereals and other food products disappearing from the market, the embargos mean that the Russian products are also unavailable. And since they are one of the main producers of fertiliser, farm production all over Europe will be hampered from this.
Many farmers are already complaining that with fertiliser being unavailable or unreasonably expensive and diesel prices going through the roof they can no longer keep doing what they're doing. Saw an interview with a Swedish farmer that complained his production costs had risen by nearly 300%, and he didn't have much of a margin to begin with. Now he'll be selling at a loss.
So, with the loss of a quarter of the world's wheat and a sharp drop in availability of other food products and a rising number of farmers elsewhere going bankrupt or just selling the farm to do something else, we can expect a severe food shortage on the horizon. In our neck of the woods it will mainly mean sky rocketing prices, but in poor countries we could expect famines to occur, especially since this coincides with global warming and increasing drought problems in large areas near the equator. Even as far north as in California they are experiencing the worst multi-year drought in at least 1200 years. Almond farmers are pumping up groundwater at alarming rates to keep their almond groves alive.

We really didn't need this war on top of everything else going on. Couldn't we just be happy that the pandemic was beginning to subside?

Well, we have plenty of moose here in Sweden, so it’s all good. Slow cook a moose roast in the oven, and then carve thin slices, serve with wild mushrooms in a cream sauce, lingonberry and potato au gratin with plenty of garlic. I don’t mind a rioja with that.

The Green Initiatives require population reduction and though the weenies missed out on the pandemic, their idle virtue signalling on the Ukraine conflict is a sign they are not letting this opportunity pass them by.
