This faction Im quite disgusted when in their company at how ignorant, unworldly and unintelligent they are, being in their company is beyond painful. The kind of people who fine dine at Applebys and buy their jewellery at the Home Shopping Network with enough hairspray to set a building in fire. Refer to Mexicans as Julios and Muslim’s as ragheads. One cousin and his wife are in charge of security with their church and are licensed to carry loaded handguns, he’s an estimator for large scale construction projects and she a dental receptionist but complete idiots to talk to, absolutely painful.

The big difference I see is that in BC, they took it seriously and had a cohesive message from the get-go. Down south, it was instantly politicized and quickly turned into a shitshow.

So it's left up to the individual to do what they think is best. There are concerts going on around here, and other large gatherings, so it's only a matter of time before cases in Nebraska start going back up. Thankfully I'm in a situation where I can avoid almost everyone and wear a mask when I do need to go out.

Statistics and numbers can be used to tell any story, and the media has to get clicks and sell ads - so the 'bad' numbers get more boost. I've been tracking this since March and see a few trends in the US.

Testing is up, so positive cases are up.
Deaths per case are going down - more young people are getting the virus and recovering.
Positive cases per test started at about 3% in March and is down to about 0.12%
Deaths per day have gone from a peak of about 1800 a day in April to about 500 a day now (and slowly climbing).

If Canada had tested the same number of people as the US, they would find about 1.4 million positive cases, vs the US's 3 million.
If Canada had the same population as the US, the number of dead would be about 79,000 vs the US's 133,000

So whatever Canada is doing, it seems to be working. Keep the border closed.

Where do the middle-to-upper-class dogmatic moralist progressives fit in? That's my town, and I would have thought a great deal of California (with the truly upper class too). The love-all-lives live-and-let-live hippies are a dying breed in this country. Most progressives nowadays don't think Appleby-eating gun-toting Walmart-shopping Merkans should be allowed to live like that, or look down on them from their moralist pedastal like they are subhuman knuckle-draggers...Wait, Chef, you didn't ... did you?

What am I for real? I don't like being told what to do or what to think, but I usually do the right thing and think deliberately. I think the answers to most problems are found within and answered most effectively without finding someone else to blame -- even if someone else can legitimately be blamed. As a corollary, I think people should spend less time telling others how to behave and get their own house in order. I value clear thinking but find that ideology is generally the absence of truth -- so clear thinking involves understanding nuance, perspective, and sometimes incomplete answers to confounding questions. We should be okay that we can't tie everything in a bow. I think we should be humble as individuals, and allow for the fact that others might have something to offer. I think truth is messy, our subjective impressions of it prone to bias, but it exists and is worth trying to find. I think all individuals are vested with human dignity. I think one owes it to one's self, one's family, and one's society to do things well and aim to be a better person.

Politically, I value freedom and think collectivism always leads to authoritarianism -- and that authoritarians have the same foibles as the rest of us but that their errors have far greater consequences. I'm not (most) of that list, Chef, but I do identify more with the right of the American political spectrum than the left. Extreme on both ends are bad bad bad, but I find that the mainstream right is grounded in a fundamentally (classical) liberal orientation, which mitigates authoritarian or theocratic impulses that might otherwise exist, whereas the mainstream American left is increasingly infatuated with progressivism, intellectually (un)moored in post-modernism, and the unhumble in a belief that they should and can remake society. Me, I think perfection is a pipe dream but that there is more good than bad in modern society. I think the trajectory when working within our liberal system -- political freedom, individual rights, equality under the law, and regulated-when-necessary free markets -- is generally positive. And I think that mix -- political freedom, individual rights, equality under the law, and a free market orientation -- is the best bargain for the future.
