The War on Canada

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Rule of law, Canada's extradition treaty with the US, out bully meddling politics from China.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

So the Iranians shot down the passenger plane that contained many of their own people.

Shades of the Air India bombing.

You can’t reason with sick fucks like this.

“It was human error”. “It was an accident”.

Shows their equipment isn’t as high tech as in the west.

It happened two hours after the shelling of US bases in Iraq, so they were probably on high alert.
The flight had been delayed and took off almost an hour after its schedule.

Some grunts manning an anti aircraft site found a blip on the radar approaching a sensitive military site at a time when there were no scheduled flights. You have like 30 seconds to make a decision. They took the wrong one.

Most people killed were Iranian or of Iranian descent, so I’m pretty sure it was not intentional.

Better software and access to updated flight info from the nearby airport could have prevented this.

Anyway, now that Iran has confessed responsability, they need to address compensations to the Ukrainian airline and the families of the victims. And of course also make sure to prevent that it ever happens again.

So the truth is that Iran purposely shot down a plane full of Iranians to retaliate against the US? Yeah, makes sense. 😕

Exactly.

The most likely explanation right from the start was that the plane was mistaken for a hostile aircraft or missile.

It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.

USA, Iranian airlines, Persian Gulf, 1988
Russian mercenaries, Malaysian airlines, Ukraine, 2014.

Wars often bring shit like this.

It’s kind of like when a parent shoots their own kid who is sneaking in through a window in the wee hours of the night.
Supposedly their kid is in bed, so the person coming through the window must be a burglar or serial killer.

You should never pull the trigger unless you are 200% sure, but people don’t function like that.
Especially not when scared or under stress.

Also, by downing that plane they shot themselves in the foot.

All the goodwill they got as a result from the murder of Soleimani vanished like thin air.
The rallying around the flag against a foreign threat that brought people to the streets supporting the regime is now gone.
Instead the streets are filling with protesters calling the regime murderers and asking for them to resign.

This is probably also why they tried to deny it for three days, but eventually they realized it couldn’t be swept under rhe rug, and the longer they stalled the angrier people would get for the attempted cover up.

There is no way this in any way is good for the Iranian regime, and thus the logical conclusion is that it was a mistake.
They messed up.

It should serve as a wake up call to everyone. The real casualties are always average people...not governments.

I applaud the trump regime for not destroying Iran. Like him or not he did the right thing

I’m actually inclined to agree.

The assassination of Soleimani was stupid and reckless and probably just a way to divert attention from the impeachment process. But showing restraint and not retaliating against the Iranian retaliation was commendable. That could mean this doesn’t need to become a full blown war.

I’m gonna guess there were 4 -20 something kids in that launcher who had bone spurs enough to keep them out of the infantry and in a nice cosy missile launcher but not enough brains to keep their wits about them under pressure.

And the pressure would have been pretty intense. They would have been on high alert expecting the Americans to rain world war 3 down on their heads and whatever part of their courage that wasn’t running down their legs was probably wrapped up in dreams of being heroes.

So when their independent radar showed a blip of the Ukrainian airline flight they pushed their buttons and there would have been nothing the Iranian command could do about it since the SA 15 is an autonomous battlefield air defense system.

Not an accident, not a technical malfunction, plain old human incompetence and I’m betting those 4 boys are wishing they were on the airplane right about now

Well if they were on the airplane, the airplane wouldn't have been shot down

... and they'd be in just as much trouble as they are now... for going AWOL while on high alert. :drink:

True. But on the other hand they’d be far from Iran, so that’s a plus...
