The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Blob Mckenzie wrote:So you obviously don't remember the 90's ?

you mean these 90's??

"The recession of the early 1990s describes the period of economic downturn affecting much of the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The global recession came swiftly after the Black Monday of October 1987, resulting from a stock collapse of unprecedented size which saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average fall by 22.6%. This collapse, larger than the stock market crash of 1929, was handled effectively by the global economy, and the stock market began to quickly recover. However, in North America, the lumbering savings and loans industry was facing decline which eventually led to a savings and loan crisis which compromised the wellbeing of millions of Americans. The following recession thus impacted the many countries closely linked to the United States."

I remember a lot of people being bamboozled into believing the provincial government had some kind of control over a global recession. just like the political right are trying to do the same in Alberta now. Somehow its the NDP's fault the world price of oil is at a historic low and the rich carpet baggers have all fucked off.

Does UK believe the NDP will help grow the resource sector?

LOL

They lost the last election because they put a Dix in their mouth on resource development.

the political right don't want you to know that the NDP have always been A government ahead of its time
Meggs and Mickleburgh remind us of how contemporary Barrett's government seems in its concerns, especially energy resources and the environment -- and how far ahead they were of their opponents. Barrett supported the then-new ban on coastal tanker traffic, and preferred to leave resources in the ground for future generations, rather than give them away at unacceptably low prices.

The authors write: "Unlike Bennett, who had championed maximum rates of resource extraction at minimum royalty rates, Barrett believed in planned development, secondary processing, and what later would be called 'sustainable development.' "

The authors include an appendix of the Barrett government's achievements that runs to almost a hundred items -- including big ones like ICBC and the Agricultural Land Reserve, but also measures that still affect us as individuals: lowering the drinking age to 19 (and creating neighbourhood pubs to drink in); preserving Cypress Bowl for recreation; the SeaBus; air ambulance service; ending logging and mining in the provincial parks.

Barrett's government wasn't just passing laws; it was creating institutions and practices that today we take for granted, but that were shockingly radical at the time.
Oh its true, you have been kept from the truth through indoctrination. Breaks the chains of hate Blob.

Just keep on reading twisted garbage written by idiots who know nothing.
Dave Barrett and his crew were the biggest disaster this Province has ever and will ever see!
The Agricultural Land Freeze was poorly thought out. It restricted growth in logical places and allowed growth in ridiculous areas.
The Law in essence is good but too all encompassing. Hence Vancouver's resemblance to Hong Kong, sad.
ICBC is a disaster in every way, shape and form. A money syphon, to say the least, not to mention, corrupt.
But who's gonna call them on it?
The ferry system is even worse. A total disgrace! Before Barrett it was independent which was so-so. It always should have been largely funded by the Federal Government as it is a continuation of Highway 1.
Before Barrett, B.C. had what was considered the best Provincial Highways Department in the world.
That's right! Provincial Highways workers under a So. Cred. Gov.

Even though it directly affected me, I have always thought the legal drinking age should be 21. Everything I still see, tells me that could not be more fucking true!

Some of the other things you cited were already on Wacky Bennett's agenda.

Bet your one those that think the legal voting age should be lowered.
If so: Wrong! Kick it back up to 21, please!

Barrett was not elected on his ideas. He was elected because of his cocky attitude and comic relief garbage.
Times were good and people were apathetic. Whacky was getting old so they voted the goof in. Most didn't even realize what that meant, but don't try and make Barrett out to be something high on the evolutionary scale. He was a goof-ball.

For the record, I don't just blindly support whoever is considered a righty.
Whacky Bennett was fine. His Son was an idiot.

yes the law is good but its the 40 plus years of mismanagement by your right wing cronies who have pulled land out for their buddies and back room donors for things like golf courses/ casinos and exclusive resorts.

Oh I remember the "Socialism! screams in the 70s too. but did the next 40 years of social credit and BC lieberal axe it? no, they started stealing money from it to compensate for the corporate taxes they don't charge.

ICBC in its pure form was a fair and all inclusive way to keep all British Columbians mobile and able to access employment and services.

It was YOUR financially conservative governments that has been bent all these years on making profit out of a non-profit industry. (see Below )

right... so why did they privatize it again?

yeah and at the same time raise the induction age for the military. If they are too young to drink a beer they are too young to die for imperialist causes

so wrong Micky, the NDP have always been about ideas

I'm blind? OK.

It dawns on me that you are simply a hard core lefty. Why? Because you can't debate. You think you know it all.
No one knows it all and no one can predict all repercussions from actions.
We are talking Provincial politics. A newly elected entity can't just change something, or change something back at a whim. To suggest that, tells me you haven't an inkling on how things work.

OK, let's change this today! It only affects 1.2 million lives. Not to worry. They'll find work.

Iron Workers Union support the Christie Clarke and the BC Liberals because of a better jobs and apprenticeship plan than the NDP.

I've gotten several calls from the Federation of Post Secondary Educators of BC in the past couple of weeks. A pool, and a couple of invites to a phone in discussion. Obvious NDP hacks from the tone of their questions

NDP screaming about campaign finance reform.

Last time it was done was by Harcourt when he had to resign because of Stupich's bingo games. That was before Clark was decked.

Looks like the union did that without notifying the workers. :o
A rebel group of angry construction workers say they’re mad as hell at their own union for endorsing Premier Christy Clark’s Liberal Party in the approaching B.C. election.

Now they’re demanding the 1,800 B.C. members of the Ironworkers Union be allowed to vote on the endorsement before the campaign kicks off for the May 9 election.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard about it,” said retired Chilliwack ironworker Ivan Westcott, who’s leading the charge to force a vote on the union’s endorsement.

“This is a Liberal government that ripped up union contracts,” Westcott, an honorary member of the union since his retirement, said Wednesday.

Barry Hope, an Ironworkers Union member from Langley, said he’s angry his union backed Christy Clark.

“I’m sure as hell not voting for her, “ Hope said. “Of course we all want to work, but voting Liberal isn’t going to make any difference.”

“We will put them to work,” Simpson said, insisting the NDP will lay out a “significant” capital-spending program on infrastructure projects.

We will present initiatives with many more jobs for many more construction workers than this government has delivered,” he said.

Good to know that they have a crotchity old retired guy who is upset.

Of course they had 1 more member as well.

Regardless of what they did you can always find someone who is against it. Look at the teachers vote where 2% still voted against it.

So they should. The economy actually spins with the Liberals running the show. Anyone who worked here through the 90s if they weren't a teacher or a nurse has reason to fear the NDP returning to power.

Yeah no shit eh Reef. Some retired slug leading the charge . Useless piece of shit with nothing better to do with his time.

Tax and Spend NDP isn't a stereotype

Day 1 of the campaign
NDP has promised to remove the tolls on lower mainland bridges and vowed to make the rest of BC pay for the lost revenue. No word on how he'll increase taxes on rural BC

NDP has promised $10/day daycare, something their Federal comrades kicked around and was tried in Quebec but it was universally denounced as economically unsound. Parlez-vous français? Does he really want BC to become a Quebec welfare state?

NDP has promised to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. Minimum wage jobs are entry level jobs never intended to be careers. If you are trying to make a career out of an entry level position you need to do better for yourself.

Where is any of this money coming from? A corporate tax hike? That's a double whammy increase to businesses with entry level employees. It also puts the brakes on Canada's strongest economy.
