Midsummer, might as well talk politics

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Midsummer, might as well talk politics

Post by ukcanuck »

With the longest election trail ever
I guess there is plenty of time to watch the three amigos trying to avoid hitting the rhubarb.

I guess I'll have time to figure out how the hell to vote from overseas and time to figure out if Im going moderate left or extreme left.

I like Trudeau as a person and think he's representing younger people whom I think have some valuable morals and ideals.

I've always been a NDP supporter going back to the days of broadbent. I've never believed the bullshit that right wingers have been raking around about socialism since World War Two (not that I am that old!)
Conservative minded people have been in power in most countries for decades and the world increasingly is a shitpile

I'd like to see what the NDP can do

As for Harper, I notice that bullshit ads on Facebook have tripled
He doesn't field questions from reporters during his policy statements which are clearly designed to instill fear

Fear of terrorists
Fear of losing jobs
fear of losing guns

Newspapers ignore everyone but Harper.

The mcleans debate which apparently Mulcair won has been completely missing from the province newspaper (the rag simple folk get conned by in every election)

And the sheer unfair and undemocratic move to extend the election as long as possible in an attempt to bankrupt the other parties funds is so typical

How anyone not in oil and gas and mining could vote for these guys amazes me.

I would never vote NDP, don't want to see my country turn into a have not country.

Between Harper and Trudeau.

Am getting tired of Harper, been in power too long and becoming a little too arrogant, still not sure where I will vote.

Well UK, expats have been disenfranchised.

Steve looks good compared to Tommy "I don't know what the corporate tax rate is, I just want it higher" and Justin "the economy will grow from the heart outwards".

Too bad my local candidate is such a fucking dweeb.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

It would be foolish for anyone who values their pay check to vote for anyone but the Conservatives . The lefties will tax you up the ass while pandering to unions and welfare slugs . Services may improve slightly but the economy will likely go for a nosedive . The Libs will look after Ontario and Quebec . Harper is the lesser of three evils and the economy actually moves with this party in power . There is a reason the NDP has never formed govt in Canada .

Nigel Wright says Bible helped him decide to quietly give Mike Duffy $90K
OTTAWA — Top members of Stephen Harper's campaign team, including the most senior staffer in the Prime Minister's Office, were among those told in 2013 that Sen. Mike Duffy didn't pay back his own contested expenses.
But the circle of key advisers kept their lips sealed, even as cabinet ministers told the House of Commons that Duffy had "shown leadership," or that chief of staff Nigel Wright "was the only one involved."

Interesting that you point out the NDP have never been in power. It means the taxes you pay were put there by the conservatives or the liberals

The NDP have never raised your taxes
The NDP have never brought in one taxe.

The GST a tax directly on the middle and lower class (working stiffs depending on a pay check like you blob) that's courtesy of the PC's
Every recession and down turn in the economy, who's fault are those? Not the NDP

you're fear of the left is a tired con game by the 1percenters and their lacky right wing governments

I can't understand how you could fear for the economy and your job

When half of the people work at Walmart or Tim Hortons and the other half are blowing their pay checks up their nose and on their liver 1000s km away from their families in the middle of nowhere

News flash Blob. The economy is already in the toilet and its Harper and his buddies who put it there in the first place

I don't see how the Conservatives can hang their hats on a strong economic policy.

Obviously the global economy was not identical over the two periods but there was the Asian financial crisis in the late 90s and the dot com bubble burst in the early aughts - and the Liberal governments between about 1996 and 2005 just obliterated what the Conservatives have done since forming government (cut $63bn debt vs. adding $150bn, eight consecutive budget surpluses vs. one since 2008 that the Conservatives achieved on the strength of laughable projections that has been undercut anyway now that we're entering a second 'anomalous' recession during their government). Hell you could even argue that we relatively breezed through the 2008 financial crisis on the basis of work done by Harper's predecessors - you'd have a hard time arguing otherwise.

Frankly, I would happily take a harsher economic situation than we have right now in exchange for a government that lives up to the values that Stephen Harper claimed to be running on when he was originally elected Prime Minister, like say transparency and accountability.

You can cynically claim that Harper's behaviour is typical of all governments in this era but that doesn't mean we have to sit down and accept it.

Stacking that on top of what this government has done to inhibit scientific and academic progress in this country, I could never vote for a conservative candidate in good conscience even if someone could finally come out and objectively prove that one side of the interminable arguments about macroeconomic theory was actually, conclusively correct.. (and I'll pause here to    about that ever actually happening) and that it was the ones saying government should stay out of the economy.

Stephen Harper is a shitty prime minister and even accepting the dubious premise being thrown around in here for the sake of argument, I'd eat steak half as often, trade in my 40" TV for a 24" and work until I'm 70 to see his party never form government again.

Rats read this and say that again. No one could fuck this country up worse than it already is. It's time to wake up to the bullshit the conservative element had been spreading out entire lives

None of it is true probably none of it was ever true

All that the right wing propaganda has done is created a super class of 1percent super rich and driven the middle class down into low paying jobs, unemployment or worse having to travel thousand and thousands of miles from their families to try to make ends meet on an obscenely overpriced mortgage

The NDP? It's definetly time to see what they can do

We know the conservatives can look after their friends but otherwise dont give a shit about anyone else

Even the damn Americans are beginning to notice

dbr's got my vote.

muzzled scientists.
lawsuits from veterans.
surgically attached to Israel's mid-section.
With us, or with the Vic Toews'.
Mike Duffy.

Time's up.

Shook Harper's hand when he came through the North on one of his photo ops visits. Totally limp-wristed. Fuck him. I'm not sold on Mulcair, or Trudeau for that matter. Liberals have the best crop of candidates of anyone, I'm not sure why they aren't advertising their people more... they have the former head of the Army FFS. "Heart-out"... neat-o.

I'm voting ABC (and in my riding Bevington will take it handedly, I think).
