They should probably remain neutral as long as this Russian regime is conducting "special operations" on neighbouring sovereign states. It doesn't pay to antagonize zealots unless you have the muscle to defend yourself...which the Finn's and Swedes do not.
They would if they joined….
This is what the Ukes were doing. Didn't work out that well did it
NATO doesn't automatically accept a nation....it takes years of deliberations. This delay is why Putin stormed the castle
Uhm... apples and oranges.
Nato did not want Ukraine and/or Georgia to join. The Ukraine and Geoegia wanted to, but Nato has been more like "oh, you want to join, how nice, well, we're a bit busy right now, but maybe we can have lunch sometime and discuss this... Oh, shit, seems I'm fully booked for the moment, but we'll definitely consider this. Leave your phone number with my secretary. We'll talk to you later. Don't call us, we'll call you.
In the case of Finland and Sweden, they have been wooing us since WW2. We're their dream candidates. Jens Stoltenberg, the Norwegian who is the head of Nato, has stated that they would accept us immediately. We fullfill all their criteria and there's no need for any waiting period.
And talking about Ukraine... Sweden and Finland have a partnership with Nato, the same thing that Ukraine had. We have been saying that even though we're not members, we do have a partnership, so Nato would surely assist us if anything happens. Yeah right.
The Russian attack on Ukraine has proven the whole partnership thing to be useless. Those who insisted that this was almost the same have been proven wrong. So, the popular opinion has switched from pro-neutrality to pro-Nato in no time. Finland will almost certainly apply in May, and if we don't we're the only Nordic country outside of Nato, so so much for regional cooperation.
Most people in both Finland and Sweden favour close military cooperation between our two countries, so most think we should handle the Nato question in tandem. And with two thirds of the Finns wanting to join, they'll drag us into this the same way we dragged them into the European Union. Public opinion in Sweden favoured joining the EU, but the Finns were more sceptical, yet once they realized we were joining they tagged along.
Oh... as for muscle... the Russians tried to conquer Finland three times in the 20th century.
They failed.
