The Absurd and Whimsical Humour of Vladimir "Dobby" Putin

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Finland knows.

I mean, when he says they are prepared to be invaded a second time…. Uhm… second???!

Finland used to be part of Sweden, and throughout the centuries that it was, the Russians were constantly attacking. Pretty much every war we fought, that wasn’t against Denmark, was against Russia. In 1809 they managed to take all of Finland, and turned it into a duchy under Russian rule. Then during the revolution, when the Russians were busy fighting eachother, Finland sneaked off and declared independence in December of 1917. Of course it also meant kicking out the Russian troops that were stationed there, but the Russians, under Lenin, acknowledged it in February of 2018. Yet as soon as Stalin came to power he started to work on incorporating Finland into the Soviet Union. Just like Putin, he was an imperialist who felt Russia had an intrinsic right to rule over its neighbouring countries. This led to two wars, the Winter War 1939-40, and the Continuation War 1941-1944. Finland fought hard for their independence and unlike Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine, who had also declared themselves independent at the time of the Russian revolution, they survived as an independent nation. But they did lose 9% of their territory, including their second biggest city, Vipuri, and some 450,000 Karelians had to be relocated to other parts of Finland. One of my wife’s cousins is married to the son of such relocated Karelians, so they have a framed photo of their Karelian farm, that they dream of hopefully some day be able to get back.

Finns are not naïve about Russia. They know from experience that they can never be trusted. That is why Finland has an unproportionally large army and bomb shelters for everyone. It is a matter of survival. During the Winter War the Russians bombed the major cities. Much like they do in Ukraine today, and as they did in Chechenya and Syria. The Russians have never been good at respecting the rules of war or the rights of civilians.

As a Finnish diplomat is supposed to have said back in the Reagan days when an American politician was hounding him for Finland being to soft on Russia: ”Our president has personally killed six Russians. How many Russians have your president killed?”

The president at that time was Mauno Koivisto, who in the Continuation War was part of a reconnaissance unit that was deployed behind enemy lines.

At the current EU summit meeting in Kiruna, Sweden, above the arctic circle, Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson (conservative) announced that Sweden intends to deliver Archer howitzers to Ukraine.

These 155 mm howitzers are mounted on a modified Volvo utility truck frame. They have a 90kmh road top speed, but also good off road capibility. They are ready to fire within 30 seconds of arrival, have a 35 or 60 km range, depending on what munition you use, and can fire all of the projectiles and then leave the area before the first missile hits it target, making it near invisible for anti battery measures.

The forced transfer of children, when intended to destroy a national group, is an act of genocide under international law.

The war in Ukraine could end tomorrow if Russia just agreed to three simple and uncontroversial demands from Ukraine:

1) all Russian troops must leave Ukrainian territory (ie the internationally recognised borders from 1991)

2) both sides agree to participating fully in an international war crimes tribunal and abiding by the verdicts

3) Russia agrees to paying war damages to fund the reconstruction of everything they have destroyed

Well, I don’t really see any other options. Otherwise the war must go on till Russia is defeated.
Accepting that they are allowed to take territory by force would inevitably lead to World War 3.

If Hitler had not gotten his way with Czechoslovakia in 1938, World War 2 probably would not have happened.

We must not make the same mistake twice.

Bill Browder suggests Russian frozen assets in the West should be handed over to the Ukrainians as compensation for all the destruction the Russians have caused. The EU is actually debating that as we speak. :|

Nah, I was just commenting on your phrasing, which made it sound like a minimal set of conditions over which Putin is just being stubborn, lol

Well, that phrasing was on purpose. These are things that are required by international law and common sense.
So it is really not much to ask for.

Not disagreeing with you Per, but as you can tell from the other responses there's no chance in hell of this happening. Heck, there's not a chance of even one of those conditions being met.
