Yeah. They have expanded the tournament to include 16 teams to spread the gospel, so to say, but there aren't really 16 good hockey nations. Twelve would probably be more reasonable.

Previous years they had four groups of four, and then eliminated the worst team in each group, then merged two groups so the three best faced the three best of the other group, then quarter-, semi- and final.
The problem with this was that they had problems selling tickets for the mid-games, as they could not say which team faced which at what arena and when until the first part of the tournament was played. Thus they came up with this version. I don't think anyone is happy. Too many games end 8-0 or 9-1. I say get rid of four teams, have just twelve teams split in two six team groups. All of the good games will be there, most of the shitty games disappear.

Anyway, on May 21st there are two potentially great games; Canada vs USA and Sweden vs Russia.
And after that they move into the elimination phase with quarter finals, so the fun is about to begin! :thumbs:
One day, not too many years away, expect to see Japan, China and S.Korea, that is if it really is starting to catch on.
It would mean big bucks and the gambling proceeds, if allowed would be gargantuan. :o

They said before the Latvia game that Markström will get the game against Russia and then Lundquist will get the quarter final.
They basically consider Lundquist the designated starter, and Marky the backup, which I question, based on the second half of this NHL season. Sure, historically Henrik has been the better goalie, but he is beginning to slide while Markström is still improving, and I think Jacob is probably the better choice here and now.

Sam Reinhart tallied twice for Canada in a 5-0 win over Denmark, moving the Canadians to second in Group A at #IIHFWorlds

Standings before the last round:

Group A

team gp pts w otw otl l gf:ga
1 FIN 6 16 5 0 1 0 20:7
2 CAN 6 15 5 0 0 1 33:11
3 USA 6 14 4 1 0 1 27:12
4 GER 6 12 4 0 0 2 14:16
===================================
5 SVK 6 9 3 0 0 3 26:18
6 DEN 6 5 1 1 0 4 17:21
7 GBR 7 2 0 1 0 6 9:41
===================================
8 FRA 7 2 0 0 2 5 14:34

Games May 21st:
Finland vs Germany, Canada vs USA, Slovakia vs Denmark

Finland most likely wins the group while Canada and the US fight it out over second place.
Slovakia can reach the same points total as Germany, but then the first tiebreaker is the game between them, and Germany won that.
Thus there will be no change in what four teams move on to the quarter finals.

France will be demoted.

Group B

team gp pts w otw otl l gf:ga
1 RUS 6 18 6 0 0 0 29:3
2 CZE 6 15 5 0 0 1 34:10
3 SWE 6 15 5 0 0 1 37:14
4 SUI 6 12 4 0 0 2 23:9
=============================
5 LAT 6 6 2 0 0 4 17:19
6 NOR 6 6 2 0 0 4 18:29
7 ITA 7 2 0 1 0 6 5:48
=============================
8 AUT 7 1 0 0 1 6 9:40

Games May 21st:
Sweden vs Russia, Czechs vs Switzerland, Norway vs Latvia

As in group A, we already know which four teams will make the quarter finals, but we do not know their order yet.
Russia and Sweden fight it out over first place, but if Sweden wins while the Czechs beat Switzerland it gets complicated as that would result in three teams with the same points totals and Russia having beaten the Czechs, the Czechs having beaten Sweden and Sweden having beaten Russia, which renders the first tiebreaker void. I assume goal differential is the next tiebreaker, and before today's games Russia is +26, the Czechs +24 and Sweden +23, so every goal will be important.
If the Swiss beat the Czechs they rise to third place.

Austria will be demoted.

Should be an exciting evening tonight with some quality hockey! 8-)

Hopefully we will do better against the Russians in Bratislava than we did at Poltava. :|

...which brings us to an old Soviet era joke:

Ivan: Things really suck.
Segei: Yeah they do.
Ivan: And do you know whose fault it is?
Sergei: I don't know, probably the US imperialists...?
Ivan: No, it's all Charles XII of Sweden's fault!
Sergei: ????? What do you mean it's Charles the XII's fault?
Ivan: Well, you know, if he had only beaten Peter the Great at Poltava, we would all be living in Sweden!

Holy shit! :shock:

Germany beats Finland!

So, OK, now Canada and the USA battle it out for first place in the Group, Finland will come second and in case Canada wins in regulation time, Germany grabs third place ahead of the USA.

The Czechs beat Switzerland 5-4 in regulation and are now tied with Russia for first place.
If Sweden should lose against Russia (or win in ot or on penalties) we come in third and will face Finland in the quarter final.
If Sweden beats Russia in regulation, we will be tied with Russia and the Czech Republic at 18 Points, with all three teams having beaten one and lost against one of the other two. Thus first place will be decided by goal differential.

Before the game starts, Russia stands at +26, the Czechs at +25 and Sweden at +23. If Sweden wins by two goals we pass Russia and tie the Czechs. I assume the next tiebreaker is scored goals. If we win by 2-0, both Sweden and the Czechs will be tied in that aspect as well, 39 goals, so I assume it boils down to Sweden having to score at least three goals and win by a two goal margine to win the group.

If Sweden wins by just one goal, we still finish third.

Oh, and if we win the Group we probably face Germany in the quarter final, or the US if Canada wins in regulation.
