No. Not at all. The 2nd worst team in the league just outshot us by almost 20 shots. One of our pair of regulation goals was because Ottawa gift wrapped to Pearson.

That wasn’t a well played game by the Canucks. It was an exceptional game by Demko.
Those gift wrapped goals should not count. Just think, we would be in first place if the league decided to vitiate all gift wrapped goals.
The only HW the Canucks need

I agree with this conclusion -- poor game overall by the Canucks but Demko played exceptionally well.

But I'm not all that bothered by the shot differential in and of itself; not all shots are created equal. Ottawa's approach to the Canucks has been to shoot the puck a lot, whenever there is a lane to do so (and often when there is not). In the first period, Vancouver seemed a little off, the shot total was 18-8, yet I thought the dangerous chances were about even. In the second, Ottawa dominated the period from beginning to end, but the shot differential was less than half of the first. In the third period, the Canucks played their best hockey for about 12 minutes, setting the pace, playing "the best defense is good offense" approach. For the remaining 8 minutes, it was a game of keep possession outside as much as possible, clear the zone, defend again -- and Ottawas was mostly "throw the puck at the net, throw the puck at the net." When they exhibited more patience, the Canucks gave them a few d-zone gaffes in the period -- Demko bailed the Canucks out -- and it took the extra man to even it up. The result? Again, a heavy shot advantage for the Senators in a period that they were without an answer for the first half -- and it was that dominating first half that made the script for the second half.

Ottawa is not a train wreck of a team up front. The defensive personnel is terribly suspect (in my view), but the forward group is a NHL caliber with young players that will get better. With a more credible #1 pivot, they would be quite good from the personnel perspective, I think. And it is possible that Norris could internally develop to be that guy, but he's not there yet.

Goalies are a part of the team. The inability to find the big save cost the Canucks a few points earlier in the season, and finding that big save is getting them some points now. Big games in net when the overall team play is sluggish can neutralize (to a large extent) the sluggishness. It couldn't be more timely, because Pettersson really is a huge part of the team (no, not overrated). Goalies make a mediocre team good and a good team mediocre.

They'll have that much more energy for when the games actually mean something. Just imagine if they squeek into the playoffs and have been conserving gas the whole sprint only to fire up the twin turbos and start throat pumping stanley cup champions again once it becomes a marathon

They're actually resting their top gunt so he's extra fresh. They plan on driving deep this year.

There's a chance we still get in. 30% maybe. With divisional games only for this season, I think it would have been great to kill the cheat point.
Bring it back when normalcy returns.

Elmer is playing Fish while the other GM’s are waving him over to the poker table. He’s a crafty one.

Or make all games three point games, like in international hockey.

3 pt for a regulation win
2 pt for an ot or so win
1 pt for an ot or so loss
0 pt for a regulation loss

It changes the dynamics a bit, for ending regulation in a tie does not just mean that you have secured a point, it also means you have lost (at least) one point. It makes a decisive win mean more than a shootout win.

At the end of the season, if a team needs 3 points to make the playoffs, you see teams pull the goalie in a tied game to win in regulation! :D

This makes too much sense for the NHL. Having every game result in three points split between two teams is too logical. I remember this discussion before and the reasoning behind it not being implemented was something around it kept the standings tighter without giving three points to a team that dominates in regulation. Teams don’t fall out of the playoffs as quickly with the current system. I still think the current system is dumb, but whatever.
