CapFriendly @CapFriendly
Calgary #Flames have signed F Andrew Mangiapane
2 year / $2,425,000 deal

2020-21: $2,400,000
2021-22: $2,450,000

Mangiapane had filed for arbitration and was scheduled to go before an arbitrator on Oct 20.
Stats;. Link .^^
Roughly the same age, opposite wing but Virtanen has done more even with the attitude questions marks. Getting Jake signed to a resonable
deal means we can keep working with him and finally get him to top six status "OR", sign and trade as I think JV may be more coveted then
the local media and some of the fans think.

Definitely comparable, but Mangiapane is more consistent over his shorter career

Heres a decent edmonton sun article about our division and where teams sit now the dust has settled

2. VANCOUVER CANUCKS
(Last year: 78 points. Third in the Pacific)
This is a gritty, hard-working team team stocked with young skill. They took a big step forward last season, eliminating St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs and pushing Vegas to a seventh game in the second. Those are legitimate accomplishments that suggest this is a team on the rise.

They were hit hard by free agency losses, though, with goaltender Jacob Markstrom and second pairing defenceman Chris Tanev moving to rival Calgary (ouch). On top of that, third pairing defenceman Troy Stecher signed in Detroit forward Tyler Toffoli moved on to Montreal after a brief but successful stopover in Vancouver.

Those are some significant losses, but GM Jim Benning worked quickly to fill the holes. Defenceman Nate Schmidt fell into their laps when Vegas needed to clear cap space for Pietrangelo, and actually represents an upgrade on Tanev.

In goal, the Canucks made a calculated risk in letting Markstrom go. Thatcher Demko was brilliant in four playoffs games (.985 save percentage), but is untested over the long haul. Signing former Washington Capital Braden Holtby adds another layer of insurance.

The pieces are falling into place across the board, with a blue line that features a gifted young puck moving defenceman in Quinn Hughes, a big veteran in Tyler Myers, perennial 30-point man Alex Edler and now Schmidt.

Their crop of forwards led by J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser and Tanner Pearson aren’t just talented, they’ve shown they can compete in the playoffs.

If the goaltending holds out, they edge out the Oilers and Flames for second.

The type of hits he takes --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtQlQ4ojUSU
There are a few monstrous hits in his young NHL career. They pretty much all look the same. Although most of the worst of them were
penalized, (big deal), if this guy "can" make a successful come-back, he cannot keep turning his back to the play along the boards.

Yes, I am the bubble-burster who said a team can't force a player with an NHL contract to the ECHL.

Just proves Benning is asleep at the wheel. We could have afforded big Joe? Where was Benning in all of this?

So, they give up a 1st to dump Marleau, but keep Spezza while signing Thornton?

Has Toons staked out his spot on the parade route yet?

Yup, speedsters Kapanen and Johnsson OUT... snails Simmonds + Thornton IN.

These guys are gonna make that slug Spezza look fast! :wow:

The Over the Hill Gang is now running the Leaves bottom six.

Longtime playoff choker joins longtime playoff choking team.

I'll bet Old Joe demanded... and got... a full NMC.

Took another huge hit as late as July in the round robin--- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtQlQ4ojUSU

He didn’t take another hit in any round robin. He hasn’t played since the end of the 18/19 season.

Doc, didn't our fishy friend say they have the best young guys in the league?

So why are they getting rid of them and loading up on old, slow slugs.

Dubas is trying to emulate the great job Benning is doing, just a few years too late. Having quality veterans as PKers & 3rd/4th liners to help the young guns through the ups/downs of a season, in the dressing room and off the ice. Imagine what a good rolemodel/teammate to Mathews would have prevented...
