Remember The Mattress Line?

Post by Southern_Canuck »

Two twins and a King?

I just noticed that 7th round 2001 draft pick Jason King is back playing in North America with the St. John's IceCaps on an AHL contract.

Jason King

With his 63 goals in his final year of junior hockey with Halifax, I thought he had a good chance of panning out as an NHLer... but it didn't turn out that way.

Why would he come back to NA, did he wear out his welcome?

I remember hearing he was making a fair chunk of change overseas...

Hard to believe he's 30 years old, seems like only a few years ago he was a young NHL Rookie of the Month!

Dumbest line name ever....

Minus any semblance of toughness, of course... still deadly in it's time.

I thought it stood for "two queens and a King". Or would that have been the half-price playoff edition.

King wouldn't talk money, but when he played with Skellefeta in the Swedish Elite League in 2006-2007, it was reported that his contract was worth over $400,000. German deals often come with incentives regarding housing and transportation.
That was definitely more guaranteed money than King was offered in that two-way NHL contract.

I don't know how he did in Europe, wonder if he milked that one super-month as a triplet for the rest of his career?

His SEL numbers (19 points in 55 games) are reminiscent of his NHL numbers (23 points in 59 games), but he did have a decent playoff performance (5 points in 9 games) the one season he played here.

His German numbers (0.67 PPG) are closer to his AHL numbers (0.80 PPG).

Guess he has had a pretty good run in Germany, especially in 09/10 when he came close to being a PPG player.
Kind of odd though, he had excellent QMJHL stats and is a really good AHLer, but he just can't seem to take it to the next level. I, for one, had great hopes for him when he played with the Canucks, and then thought he'd be dominant in the SEL, but - nah. :(

You find his career stats per league here:

King has, however, some consistency issues and is not a very physical player nor a very reliable in his own end.
Ah, yeah... that's probably it.
