Sad news.
He was a character guy. Someone that was easy to wish the best for.

Less Canucks embarrassment please.

Wow, just Wow.
Too many concussions and too much brain damage and too much depression as a result. What a sad day.
RIP Top Shelf!

Re: Rypien passes away
This rots me... hard. I always liked the way he played - full-out - and always hoped he would carry on his progress as a player and a person. He was a tough little bastard who showed no fear out there, played honest and showed how much the size of the fight in the dog really counts.
I thought it took stones to take himself out of the game for a bit to get help, because whoever admits that kind of 'weakness' in a locker room? I was hoping he'd turned it around and put whatever it was behind him. I was actually kinda bummed when he signed with the Jets because he was the kind of guy we needed more of. Now, all that doesn't matter. I'll say a prayer for him and those who miss him most.
Rest in peace, Rypper. We'll miss ya back here.

So long Ryper, you were quite the fighter...you lost the last one...maybe we shouldn't be ashamed of or hide mental illness, maybe we should be taking it mainstream...and talking about it more...
I love every move Jim Benning makes

I'll remember when I got NHL 07 for my PSP. Ripper in that game was shockingly good even though his rating said otherwise. He just seemed to be the perfect combination of speed, toughness, and puck control. I scored a bushel of goals with him. In fact he lead my canucks in goals that season. He won the Rocket Richard, Art Ross, and led my Canucks to their first ever Cup championship. I like that reality more than this one.

You were the bravest player to ever pull on a Canuck sweater. You backed down from no one.
Unfortunately, your greatest adversary was your own reflection, and it was a battle you just couldn't continue.
At least now you can finally rest.
You will be missed.
RIP RYP

Re: Rypien passes away
(speculation alert...)
What a shame. When he signed with the Jets I'm sure he knew that he'd be facing certain demons back where he once called home. Given his history he couldn't have been in too good of a head space during his time in Winnipeg. Maybe the pressure of returning got to him and was just the icing on the cake.
Not everyone who takes their own life is a coward. Depression was maybe the toughest opponent he ever had. It runs in my family and I have three young boys. Tonight they know that a player from Daddy's favourite hockey team died. Tomorrow we get a head start on discussing and learning about depression.
Go kick Boogaards ass... and then buy him a drink. If you hurry I think Probert is still at the bar...
(btw- does Vancouver now hold the record for the team with the most unofficially retired sweater numbers?)
