Add Another to the Injury List: Luongo

Post by Island Nucklehead »

http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Canuc ... story.html

The Province is reporting that Luongo was injured in last nights game vs. Detroit.
The Vancouver Canucks will be without their best player, goaltender Roberto Luongo, for an undetermined number of games after he suffered an undisclosed injury during Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Bring on the Raycroft/Schneider tandem? This team is going to be LUCKY to play .500 hockey with all these injuries. At this point you would have to say we are the cursed team thus far this season.

And an update from TSN says it's a hairline rib fracture.

I'll take a hairline fracture over the original prognosis of undisclosed injury/out indefinitely. This team has been horribly unlucky with injuries so far, and considering Luongo went down with his first major injury last year, it would simply be cruel to inflict any more pain on us. Let's hope for the best!

Yes, let's hope for the best. If they survive the upcoming two weeks or three with a .500 record or better, they should be fine. Players like Luongo, D Sedin, Salo, Wellwood, Rypien, Hansen should be back by mid-late November. Longer term, even Demitra could be back by January.

I heard on the team 990 in Montreal that Lou is expected to miss a week. That's not so bad.

TSN is saying it's likely a week.
Luongo originally suffered the injury during this past Saturday's victory over the Toronto Maple leaves where the Montreal native made 35 saves. He appeared to aggravate the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings during a second period collision with Todd Bertuzzi.

"There is no definite timeline, because it's really about the amount of pain that you've got there," Luongo said. "I'm definitely not playing these next two games."
May be able to explain some of the third period goals against. But the guy was still fantastic throughout a majority of the game. If this is the case, he'll probably sit for a week just to rest and recover. If it was the playoffs I imagine he'd play.

Article also sums up our injury trouble pretty well (minus Rypien):
Sniper Daniel Sedin is out for up to six weeks with a broken foot while forward Pavol Demitra has yet to play this season following shoulder surgery. Janik Hansen is also on injured reserve after breaking a bone in his right hand and is expected to miss up to two months. In addition Kyle Wellwood suffered a broken toe last week while defenceman Sami Salo remains out with a sprained right MCL. To compound matters, forward Ryan Johnson also left Tuesday's game with a neck injury.
This is REALLY going to test Gillis' depth plans. If you look at our lineup for the next week, four of our top six paid players (Luongo, D. Sedin, Demitra, Salo) could be out of the lineup.

Did Lou not have problems with his ribs in the past?

Yep, December of 07 he missed three games with a rib injury. Woudln't be shocked if this one was similar.

It definitely could be worse, but if Lou misses 3-4 games it's not too horrid, considering Raycroft is already overdue for a start.

So let's say Luongo is out exactly 1 week and returns next Wednesday, he will miss 4 games. One would expect Raycroft would have started one of the upcoming 4 games anyways, since there is a back to back in Cali, and a 3 games in 4 nights scenario.

ouchhhhhh... Luongo out .. Johnson out ...

That kind of explains the third period meltdown of the Canucks against Red Wings..

Province is reporting Rypien will take Johnsons spot as 4th line center.. a good energy guy but not the face off and defensive specialist that Johnson is..
6 regulars out... maybe I don't bet a lot of $$ on the Nucks next games? .. Hopefully this is the end of the injury bug... be good to get the whole team healthy in the new year. Just hope the team can somehow play .500 hockey until Luo, Salo and Johnson get back.. Sedin, Hansen and Demitra would be a nice bonus too :)

Thank god that Raycroft has a league leading GAA!

yeah - this is not the start that anyone was expecting - I just hope to hell that it doesn't continue as season.

Quite a roller coaster so far this year - one of the best! :?

According to nhl.com, Raycroft leads the league with a 1.13 GAA and has a .941 save %.

Stats never lie, right?
