Sid Dithers wrote:2 problems....
1. The team does not have enough scoring talent. They just don't score many 'easy' goals. You know the type...off the rush...or...a guy makes a brilliant move or something like that. Everything is throw the puck at the net and scrum it. Three yards and a cloud of dust comes to hockey. It's a hard way to get by because if you're effort level is down for the night, you can't get those goals.

2. The team is too easy to play against. Kesler is a beotch to deal with, as are Burrows, Rypien and maybe one or two others. Besides them, the rest of the group scares nobody. Fook, put me up against Wellwood and I'd have him crying by the second period. Too many softies.
I disagree 100%. We have had a ton of chances, and guys like Shirikov, Grabner, Raymond and Wellwood have been unlucky in most situations, or are over-playing their opportunities. Definitely not a lack of talent. nd regarding the softies, again, I disagree. We have had a a couple of games with pathetic team effort (Colordo and Calgary), but that is a different problem completely. Toss in a typical slow start by Lou and injuries and we are right where we are expected to be, with a huge upside.
The Cup is soooooo ours!!!!!!!

I agree with Sid - we don't have the 'goal scorers'. We're going to have to work for each and every goal this year. Seeing Grabner's goal tonight was somewhat encouraging, but we need a lot more of that.

I don't agree with Sid - we're harder to play against than he's giving the team credit for. Sure we have some soft players, but most teams do. What we don't have in toughness, we make up in speed.

He's stayed in the NHL because he has plenty of natural talent (which represents potential), not for what he's actually accomplished so far. Wellwood is like the gorgeous girl at the bar who is a complete idiot. As long as she stays around, guys will keep buying her drinks even though she's a basket-case. Always some sucker willing to ante up. Gillis just happens to be the current mark, in this case.

Wrong analogy.

The gorgeous girl who is an idiot will always be an idiot. But Wellwood like other NHL players with potential still have, by definition, potential. But the dumb blonde will always be a dumb blonde. Yes, someone is willing to pay for Wellwood, but at some age he will be too ugly and the drinks will stop. Or he will be a top 6 forward and the taps will open.

Bernier, Wellwood, and Raymond are all in this boat, but predicting who is Cinderella and who is the ugly step sister is still a fool's game. And given Wellwood's salary, it is really pretty naive to call Gillis a "mark", Sid. Wellwood would get picked up pretty quickly if we tried to send him down and those dollars would be off the books. If he wasn't picked up, the Aquilini's would be paying his salary in the AHL. There is no downside with that pretty girl.

Sorry Sid, but you're pretty obviously wrong on all counts on the Wellwood case. He is and was riskless, and he could very well be an important part of this team at some point.

Wellwood has had flashes of brilliance, it's a year to make or break. He is no risk. He's either good enough or not.

3 entirely different players..
Bernier.. potential power forward not afraid to go to the dirty areas and decent defensively.
Raymond.. fastest Canuck on the ice.. but poor shot and not defensively responsible..
Wellwood.. Best shot but rarely gets in position to use it.. has become a bit more defensively responsible since coming to the Canucks..

So far this year the one that has shown the most improvement is Bernier. Raymond is still a " potential " and needs to develop more hockey sense ( pass the puck to someone who can score goals and get back to play defence as quickly as he rushes ) or go the net more and develop a better shot.. Wellwood is an enigma... shows flashes of brilliance but for the most part is invisible.

I actually don't mind that we give up a goal every game that is off our player. Sooner or later, those will disappear, and we will start getting bounces, let's hope we save those for our playoff run.

Credit where credit is due it was a much better effort by the Canucks against Chicago, who now may now be looking enviously at Edmonton's goal tending. All I ask of the hockey Gods is that the Canucks do not lose to Toronto on Saturday.

That is a must win, if not for the team, for the fans. I don't want to be ridiculed by the leaves fans.

I have a bad feeling about this one. The Canucks are not traditionally at their best on HNIC, and to make matters worse, the league bent-over to give the Leaf fans the early time slot. Add to that another longish layoff and the fact that Toronto is not going to stay winless forever... yuck.

I'd love to see the 'Nucks win about 4-0, though. Maybe a pair from Hank, one each from Wellwood and Kesler. 8-)

This is a start that I`d want Raycroft for. He gets paided by both teams!

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Nucks ... a slow start thats all ...

- some injuries - Sedin, Demitra, Salo etc.

Team will come around ... they have solid goaltending a big strong blueline with some guys now that can move the puck - Edler, Ernhoff, Bieksa, Salo. Maybe we don't have a 50 goal scorer but we have a good handful of guys that can notch 20+ - Sedin, Kessler, Burrows, Wellwood, Bernier, Samuelson ... interesting to see how the younger guys do. If they have solid years that could make a huge difference.

No panic yet ... their last few games have been noticeably better ... minimizing sog's by opponents while their sog's are up. Some hot goaltending ... goals will come....
