Rather nice shootout goal by EDM draft pick...

Post by Bret H »

In case you haven't already seen it: Linus Omark, drafted by the Oilers, showed he has some good hands in a shootout vs Switzerland the other day:

Omark and fellow youngster Johan Harju led their SEL team Lulea to the quarterfinals this season, and gave their team a chance at the semis, basically all on their own. We might see Omark trying to make fun of Luongo already next season! 8-)

Another one of his "classics", from an SEL game

I doubt schremp will make the club, i don't think his overall game is close to where an NHL team wants it to be. He just has hands. But we'll see.. I was goig to say as long as Mac T is coaching.. which may not be for long. I would doubt he will be up there soon.

He's quite dominant. Very strong puck posession for his age. When he and Harju kept the puck in the offensive zone they reminded me of the Sedins. Difference is that they do not have exactly the same scary knowledge of where the other guy is, but on the other hand they are much stronger than the Sedins were at that age. You don't push them around.

I think Omark will be a very good player in the NHL. Whether that means first line or second line is to early to say. But he will be on Team Sweden's roster for the world cup this spring, it'll be interesting to see how he match up against international competition.

Yes, Switzerland it is. Looks like Sweden can count in Loui Eriksson from Dallas. Hope St Louis and Rangers don't make the playoffs so we can count in Lundkvist and Patrik Berglund as well. Then we just need a fast exit by Detroit and we're set! :D

He's got an offer to play in Russia next year for $1mill.
I guess we find out in a hurry what his career goals are :)

From what i have heard i get the feeling he wants to play in the NHL but he is trying to secure the rookie max, having this out gives him an option of making that kind of money. Kinda glad Hodgson didn't do something like this.. I personally don't like it but i guess maybe he is just weighing his options. Again as an objective fan i wouldn't want a guy that is just looking for the highest bidder.

I don't really subscribe to the highest bidder theory, especially with respect to European players. If the roles were reversed, why would I want to take 100K to play in the minor leagues, when someone much closer to home is offering me ten times that much to play in arguably a better league? If the Oilers were guaranteeing him a spot on their NHL roster, with a salary comensurate to that, I'm sure you'd see him try to hack it in the NHL, but if they're unwilling to promise him more than a decent shot, he'd be a fool not to take the cash for a year in the K.

I would be very, very surprised if he plays in Russia. Sure, it is closer to home but I think it is safe to say that for any Swede, North america feels much more as home than Russia... players that go to Russia are either:

* in the end of their career
* did not earn a regular job in the NHL

Young players don't end up in Russia without giving the NHL a try.

Swedish players in Russia are the ones like Magnus Johansson (about 35, six-seventh d-man in Chicago/Florida last season), Mattias Weinhandl (Wild/Islanders), Tony Martensson (Anaheim)...

When a newspaper says he is "considering to play in Russia" it only means he has been offered a contract. Not his fault really...

... I would also be surprised if he didn't make the NHL. Of course there is a transition period, he might need a year in the AHL. Even Naslund had a tough time the first few years. But he has the skill, and he is not afraid to go into the corners or get to the net. I can't see that he can fail really.

Different type of coaches, long away from home, different type of play... there are many factors when you come to a new league and new country at age 22 and I no idea how Omark will handle it, but sooner or later he will adjust. Mark my words ;-)

I agree with Nucklehead though... it is not obvious that you would take 100k to play in the AHL when you can have 1M to play in the KHL. Even though Russia is not like home, it's easier for you to go home during leaves, and it is easier for others to come and visit you. If you have a chance to play for a team with other Swedish players, then the 900k might be worth it... so yes, I understand that Omark will do his best to get a one-way contract. Can't blame him.
