Who likes Wellwood now ?
I was always a fan and hoped he would do well, but I must say I am surprised by his recent form. I could not understand the hate some people had for him.
Anyone changing their tune on Welly ???

How could you just say "nope"? This is a team that needs his ability to score, and he's smart enough to play on the 4th line and powerplay if need be. I know its only been a handful of games, but the goals he scored take tremendous skill. After the last two seasons, its refreshing to see his finish.

I think he's really proven that he belongs in a scoring role, and his talents were never really in question... but I'm not sold yet. Let's see how he performs after Christmas.

I think he needs to prove he is willing to keep up his end of the bargain, and with his past it is going to take at least a season of good play for me to have any faith in him. While he is hot, of course you play him, but if he starts slacking off again? Adios.

ok, fair enough. I agree with you there, its not like he warrants a contract extension or anything like that right now. I thought you meant he shouldn't be played either, I misunderstood.the toucan kid wrote:I think he needs to prove he is willing to keep up his end of the bargain, and with his past it is going to take at least a season of good play for me to have any faith in him. Those hands are elite level though, he had two chances last night, and he buried both. The second goal was sick, 'cause he had no room to do what he did. I can't think of anything more humbling than what he's had to deal with (deserved I know), maybe we're seeing a GOOD story come out of this, you know , with all the CHANGE in the air right now.

In his own words he thought he had a 95% chance of being out of the NHL for good. So he either wants to be here or he doesn't, but time will tell. His chances of being with the team at the end of the year is certainly greater than 5% I think.
He has the talent to make it, that is for sure, and I hope he makes it.

he also said to stay in the NHL he has to produce a point per game.... lofty goals and for all our sakes I hope he makes it.dr.dork wrote:In his own words he thought he had a 95% chance of being out of the NHL for good. Re: Who likes Wellwood now ?
I've liked him since his unbelievable goal at the world juniors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfH0jfdf6Ck
however, let's not get ahead of ourselves. He is a powerplay specialist (4 of 6 on the PP, with another of those coming two seconds after a penalty expired), and there's not much chance that he can keep up his 46% shooting percentage.
He is working a lot harder since his call up though, let's hope he keeps that up.

The guy has hands - that's a given.
His effort isn't a given yet.

Re: Who likes Wellwood now ?
I don't see how you could send him down now. He's basically scored his way onto the roster and would never clear waivers on the way down now. I think when Demitra comes back we have some interesting dilemnas in terms of who you sit. There's always going to be a lot of haters on this guy but we haven't had a natural goal scorer on this team in years that played a regular shift so try to smile a bit guys.

I need to see more. He's having a nice run right now, but then so did Jeff Cowan a few years back.
The truth will sort itself out when he goes into a slump and AV can't use him because Wellwood can't check, can't hit and can't kill penalties. Wellwood is a one-trick pony. It's a great trick, but what do you do with him if it dries up?

Re: Who likes Wellwood now ?
Let's be realistic about this; as well as he's been playing, K-Wellfed is two or three bad games away from riding the pine and he knows it. With Bernier not clicking with the Sedins, and Hansen on the limp, they had to reach back into the farm to try to get some secondary scoring into the lineup. Don't forget, they also called up Pettinger, Krog, and now Ouellet.
K-Wellfed has done well for himself and the team and has contributed when and where the team needs it the most: on the PP. That said, I hope he continues to be successful, at least through this next month which I think is an absolute necessity if this team is going to compete in the Top 8 in the west.

As I've said from the get-go, when we are healthy Wellwood gets 4th line ice-time and a powerplay spot. That was he won't get tired with that pesky 5-on-5 skating.
so Brown sits most nights - he's kind of redundant to Hordi anyways.
