2nd round pick and the Blues have a week.
Backes is a 24 year old 6-3 200lb RW Shoots Right
13g 18a 31pts -11 in 72 games this year, all career highs.
Tell me why that is worth $2.5M?
Edit: Remember when we called Clarke an asshole for signing Kesler to an offersheet? I am really starting to detest Gillis.

Backes. I don't know much about the guy, but would he be a good fit for the twins in your opinion?mattola wrote:Vancouver signs RFA forward David Backes to an offer sheet, 3 years $7.5-million. St. Louis has seven days to match or accept a 2nd round draft pick as compensation.

What a dumb move. If Sundin signs Gillis has to realize that he has little to no money to work with, right?Sid Dithers wrote:And that 7.5 is tied up for a week in limbo. Which means it's not usuable for other free agents today.jchockey wrote:They have a week to match.
Backes has got some upside, I've watched some Blues games. He's not the craziest signing I've seen today. Jeff Finger to the leaves for $3.5m? Please.

St. Louis fans seem to think this is an automatic match and consider him a future captain. Why is GIllis doing this? Poaching off teams that have tons of cap space to match any offer? All that does is piss people off. Every second that passes reminds me more and more of Mike Millbury. Anyone up for trading Louie?

i disagree...you can go over the cap limit by a certain amount during the summer, as long as you get down below it by some date in sept or oct. that means nothing is tied up right now, but if Gillis goes over, he'll have to trade or otherwise bury salary the rest of the summer.Sid Dithers wrote:And that 7.5 is tied up for a week in limbo. he's got about 20 million, so no fear of that so far.

I don't believe so, no.Kel wrote:It would be a huge surprise if St Louis doesn't match. The only reason may be that they have too many RWs and Backes is the one they want to get rid of the most. (Once you match an offer sheet, you can't trade.) Is St Louis still allowed to trade him before the deadline to match?
