Sources tell TSN at the last moment the NHL provided a list of terms that Balsillie didn't want to agree to. Among those terms was a promise that the franchise would remain in Pittsburgh regardless of circumstances. Also, if problems arose, the NHL would take over control of the franchise

Balsille must be thinking about moving the team away, otherwise why would he buy without knowing whether they will build a new arena in Pittsburgh? On the other hand, the NHL is still dreaming that it could become popular in the US and refuse to let any team to move out of the US into Canada. If Balsille was telling NHL that the team would be moved to another US city, it would have been approved, just like when Hartfold moved to Carolina

So much for the end of the Penguins financial woes. Looks like they might have trouble keeping all their young talent in a few years when free agency hits - hell, given Clarke's breaking the floodgates with the offer sheet to Kesler, they might have problems sooner than later if some other GMs decide to go the way of the wolf.... Imagine Malkin in a Canuck uniform :-) (I know only in my dreams)

Just plain dumb if Buttman put all these conditions on him because he doesn't want a U.S. team to move to Canada. Balsillie would have to be nuts if he agreed to these conditions.
38 years without a Stanley Cup and counting.
