Oh? Did Picker say it's "a foregone conclusion that (Pod is) gonna be a 60+ point winger"?

pssst: you've got some straw in your hair and a little under your fingernails bro
What exactly does penciling someone in mean to you?

How many points do you consider to be acceptable production for a first line winger?

You’re off your game tonight Herr Doktor.
Lol, nice try!

Well not really...

Cherry Picker wrote: Sun Apr 11, 2021 7:45 am The quote I said was if Miller were playing centre the best fit was Pod on the wing with Petey and Boeser. My exact quote was,

“I’d want to try Podkolzin with Petey and Brock even if he won’t score as much as Hoglander. You wouldn’t want Hoglander and Boeser on the same line because neither has the high end speed to forecheck effectively. Even if he isn’t a sniper, Podkolzin can pass and has forechecking ability, so just retrieving the puck to scorers like Petey and Brock may lead to a successful line.”

The concept is that the team would spread out the scoring onto three lines
if Miller is at centre on a different line than Petey and Brandon Sutter isn’t resigned, which is what this thread is about. I don’t predict how many points Podkolzin would score because that wouldn’t be his focus on that line. His speed, forechecking, defence and passing would be his focus. He would not score like Miller would on the wing, but the hope would be that the spreading out of scoring with Miller on a different line at centre would lead to better team scoring depth. Spreading out scoring can do that. Think of Podkolzin as a better forechecking version of Semenko without the fighting. The scoring came from Gretzky and Kurri on that line. If Petey and Brock are able to do their job scoring with Podkolzin retrieving pucks then the line can have success even if he doesn’t score many points. Another example might be Burrows with the Sedins. Burrows was there to get the puck for the Sedins who were not the fastest fore checkers. Like Podkolzin, his scoring was irrelevant to the structure of the lines as long as the Sedins were scoring. So yes, you are putting up strawmen when you set up a certain points total as potential failure on a top line.

This post makes me think of Pearson and Benning saying they needed 2 or 3 more Pearsons in the line up.

Serviceable top 6 wingers that can mix and match with 3 lines with no prototypical 1C driving the bus. Of which Podkolzin would make a happy addition

Guessing the cap of the second 40 pounder has already hit the floor since the Gaudette trade was announced.

With the amazing Jay Beagle out of action well into next year, there is a need for centre depth and foundational type leaders. Adam Gaudette hasn’t panned out. Brandon Sutter’s contract runs out at the end of the year. I would be shocked if he isn’t brought back.

4 years x 3.5 million annually is my guess. He’s a team guy and he will take a pay cut.

Let’s put the band back together!
I'm going to guess it ends up coming in at a team friendly 2x$2.75. I see 'Sutts' leaving money on the table. You know, him being a team first kind of guy and all.

That'd be another 'glue guy' retained in addition to Tanner Pearson. The room is going to be a sticky place with all that glue...

Is anyone in this thread serious about bringing Sutter back?

I doubt it.

Well maybe Mick...

Depending on the price/term, I don't object.

Is there a 3C in the system ready to displace him and what is the cost of replacement?

Exactly he can still play at the nhl level, he was fine in the bubble and this year as well, ideally he slots in as your fourth line center pk specialist. Of course he needs to be paid like a fourth line center (and not the beagle variety).

Unfortunately, we've had enough time to see that Gaudette was nowhere close to replacing Sutter as the everyday 3rd line center. In some metrics, he couldn't even replace Beagle as the 4th.

I'd love to move on from both Sutter & Beagle after this season, but in today's market, it would cost the same if not more for the same services if you don't have the pieces in-house ready to step up.

I stand corrected, seems a coupla folks are good with brining him back at the right price.

Me, I'd rather go shopping for a Sutter-upgrade in UFAgency.

Sutter is 32 now, is injury prone, and has slowed down some.

All the surgeries/groin issues haven't done him any favours.

Also I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of an asshole in that spot.

But to each their own...
